ACC Approves Two-Year Extension of Shri Santosh Gopal Ajmera’s Central Deputation as Joint Secretary in UPSC
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved a two-year extension of Shri Santosh Gopal Ajmera, IInfoS (2008), as Joint Secretary (Director level) in UPSC under the Central Staffing Scheme. His deputation now continues until February 2028
In a significant administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared the proposal to extend the central deputation tenure of Shri Santosh Gopal Ajmera, an officer of the Indian Information Service (IInfoS), 2008 batch, who is currently serving as Joint Secretary (Director level) in the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).
According to the official communication issued by the Department of Personnel & Training (DoPT), Office of the Establishment Officer, Kartavya Bhawan, New Delhi, Shri Ajmera’s tenure has been extended for a further period of two years beyond 25 February 2026, i.e., until 25 February 2028, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Background of the Extension
The decision follows a proposal submitted by the UPSC through its letter dated 12 February 2026, seeking continuation of Shri Ajmera’s services under the Central Staffing Scheme. The ACC, after due consideration, approved the extension, thereby ensuring continuity in the Commission’s senior-level administrative leadership.
It is noteworthy that Shri Ajmera has been on central deputation since 26 February 2021, and his role as Joint Secretary has been pivotal in strengthening the Commission’s administrative and operational framework.
Guidelines and Compliance
The DoPT has reiterated the guidelines issued on 17 August 2005, which mandate that an officer must assume charge of the post within three weeks from the date of issue of the appointment order. Non-compliance with this directive could lead to initiation of the process of debarment from the Central Staffing Scheme.
This clause underscores the importance of timely assumption of duties by officers appointed under the scheme, ensuring that critical positions in the Government of India are not left vacant.
Significance of the Role
As Joint Secretary (Director level) in the UPSC, Shri Ajmera plays a crucial role in:
Overseeing administrative coordination within the Commission.
Supporting policy formulation and implementation.
Ensuring smooth functioning of recruitment and examination processes.
Acting as a key link between the Commission and the Government of India on staffing and personnel matters.
The extension of his tenure is expected to provide stability and continuity in the Commission’s functioning, especially at a time when the UPSC continues to handle large-scale recruitment responsibilities for the country’s civil services.
The extension of Shri Santosh Gopal Ajmera’s deputation reflects the government’s confidence in his administrative capabilities and contributions to the UPSC. With his tenure now extended until 2028, he will continue to play a vital role in strengthening the Commission’s institutional framework and supporting its mandate of conducting fair and transparent examinations for India’s civil services.
