Centre Issues Fresh Orders on Transfers and Extensions in Key Departments

The Government of India has issued two significant administrative orders affecting senior officials in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti. As per the directives cleared by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has approved the early repatriation of IPS officer Sudhir Kallaya Hiremath to his parent cadre in Maharashtra and granted an extension of additional charge to Atul Jain in a major water infrastructure project.

Sudhir Hiremath Returns to Maharashtra Cadre on Personal Grounds

Sudhir Kallaya Hiremath (IPS:2007:MH), who was serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the CBI, has been repatriated to Maharashtra before the completion of his tenure. His premature return was approved on personal grounds, as per a proposal from the AV Division of the DoPT and ratified by the ACC.

According to the official order issued on July 12, 2025, his repatriation also comes with an extended cooling-off period—meaning his return to central deputation may be delayed.

Hiremath had joined the CBI in February 2023 following an induction order dated January 31, 2023. His tenure in the central agency was expected to last longer, but his return comes less than three years into service. Importantly, he was recently empanelled (on May 11) to hold Inspector General (IG)-level positions in the Government of India—an indication of his growing stature in the central bureaucracy.

Atul Jain’s Role Extended at Polavaram Project Authority

In a parallel development, Atul Jain, who is currently the Chairman of the Krishna River Management Board (KRMB), will continue to hold additional charge as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Polavaram Project Authority, Hyderabad.

A DoPT order dated July 12, 2025, states that Jain’s dual-role extension will be effective from May 28, 2025, for a period of six months, or until a regular appointment is made—whichever is earlier. This decision follows a proposal submitted by the Department of Water Resources, River Development, and Ganga Rejuvenation under the Ministry of Jal Shakti.

Jain has played a pivotal role in overseeing inter-state river water management and has been directly involved in the Polavaram project—one of India’s flagship irrigation and water security initiatives aimed at improving agricultural output and regional water access.

Significance of the Decisions

These administrative moves underscore the Centre’s strategic approach to cadre management and its commitment to deploying experienced officers in roles of national importance—whether in law enforcement or critical infrastructure. The decisions highlight a focus on continuity, efficiency, and timely repositioning of leadership in vital sectors.
