Senior IAS officer Navin Mittal has been targeted in Facebook impersonation scam where acquaintance loses ₹99,000.
A cyber fraud incident involving a fake Facebook profile impersonating senior IAS officer Navin Mittal has resulted in an acquaintance being cheated out of ₹99,000. Mittal has since filed a police complaint against the unidentified scammers.
According to reports, the fraudsters created a duplicate Facebook account using Mittal’s photos and personal details. On May 11, they contacted one of his friends, Manish Agarwal, pretending to sell household items on Mittal’s behalf and convinced him to transfer the money.
In his complaint, Mittal expressed concern over the scammer’s repeated attempts to exploit his contacts, causing both financial and emotional harm. He also criticized Facebook India for not implementing sufficient measures to prevent such impersonation scams despite existing safeguards.
The Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police have registered a case under Sections 318(4) (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property) and 319(2) (cheating by impersonation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with relevant sections of the IT Act. Authorities are actively investigating the case to trace the culprits.
