About the ITBP

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police, established in 1962, is primarily tasked with guarding the 3,488-kilometre Indo-China border. Over time, the force has developed into a specialized unit with capabilities in high-altitude combat, disaster relief, and internal security. Officers on deputation to the ITBP play a strategic role, especially in view of the ongoing challenges along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

IPS Tenure Policy & Deputation Framework

As per the IPS Tenure Policy, officers become eligible for central deputation after completing a minimum prescribed tenure in their respective state cadres. Deputation to forces like the ITBP provides officers with critical exposure to national security operations, border management, and multi-agency coordination, enhancing their professional capabilities.
