IAS Officer Ashish Chatterjee Appointed as Government Director on SAIL Board

Mr. Ashish Chatterjee, a 1999-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, has been appointed as the Government Director on the Board of Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). The appointment, made in his capacity as Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, comes into effect immediately and will remain in force until further orders.

A Diverse and Distinguished Career

Mr. Chatterjee holds a degree in Chemical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and brings with him over 25 years of experience across state and central government roles.

During his tenure in Tamil Nadu, he served as the District Collector in Viluppuram, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur districts, where he was instrumental in driving governance reforms and development initiatives. He also contributed significantly to urban administration during his time with the Corporation of Chennai.

At the central level, Mr. Chatterjee has held several key assignments. As Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, he played a pivotal role in policy development and regulatory affairs. He has also served as Government Nominee Director on the boards of major public sector undertakings (PSUs) such as GAIL (India) Ltd., Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. (IOCL), and Engineers India Ltd. (EIL), actively participating in their strategic decision-making.

Since April 2025, he has been serving as Additional Secretary and Financial Advisor in the Ministry of Steel, overseeing fiscal strategy and policy planning within the steel sector.

His induction into the SAIL Board is expected to enhance governance and strategic direction at the state-owned steel giant.
