As Mr. G.K. Goswami, the founding Director of the Uttar Pradesh State Institute of Forensic Sciences (UPSIFS), approaches his retirement on September 30, 2025, there is considerable speculation regarding the future leadership of the institution. Furthermore, it remains a subject of active discussion whether Mr. Goswami’s association with the establishment will continue in some new capacity following his retirement.
The senior Indian Police Service officer, from the 1997 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, who is widely recognized for his significant contributions to law enforcement and forensic science education, will conclude his official duties upon turning sixty years of age.
No Official Successor Yet, with Speculation Concerning a Post-Retirement Role
According to sources within Lucknow’s administrative circles, the government of Uttar Pradesh has not yet finalized a successor for this crucial position. Should no suitable candidate be identified promptly, it is possible that Mr. Goswami may be retained in an advisory capacity or special assignment role. This consideration stems from his central and indispensable role in building the institute from its foundation.
Officials familiar with the matter have stated that his deep institutional knowledge and extensive network within both national and international forensic science communities could make him a valuable asset even after his formal retirement.
Pioneering Leadership Since the Inception of the Institute
Mr. G.K. Goswami was appointed as the first Director of UPSIFS, an institution that was inaugurated by Honourable Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath on August 16, 2023. The institute, conceived as a center of excellence in forensic education, training, and research, commenced its first academic session in 2023 under his careful guidance and leadership.
His stewardship was instrumental in operationalizing infrastructure, recruiting qualified faculty, and formalizing partnerships with various forensic science agencies and reputable academic institutions.
Key Questions Remain as September 30 Approaches
With less than one month remaining until Mr. Goswami’s retirement, several important questions remain unanswered:
Will the government announce a new director in a timely manner?
Will Mr. Goswami be offered a special advisory or honorary rolefollowing his retirement?
