Ex-IFSCA Chief Brings 40+ Years of Governance and Regulatory Experience

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) has appointed Srinivas Injeti, a retired 1983-batch IAS officer, as the new Chairperson of its Governing Board. His appointment, approved by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), is effective immediately. The announcement follows closely on the heels of NSE naming Injeti as a Public Interest Director on its board last week.

With this development, NSE has filled a key leadership vacancy that had remained open since the completion of Girish Chandra Chaturvedi’s tenure in 2024.

Who is Srinivas Injeti?

Srinivas Injeti brings to NSE more than four decades of leadership experience in corporate regulation, financial services, governance, and public policy.

He was the founding Chairperson of the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), serving from 2020 to 2023. During his tenure, he played a central role in setting up India’s first international financial regulator and advancing initiatives in global banking, FinTech, sustainable finance, the funds ecosystem, and Global Capability Centres (GCCs).

From 2017 to 2020, he served as Union Secretary in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, where he led landmark reforms in insolvency, competition, and company law. His tenure witnessed the creation of the National Financial Reporting Authority (NFRA) and the databank for Independent Directors, both of which significantly strengthened India’s corporate governance framework. He also enhanced the CSR regulatory framework, positioning India among the few nations with a comprehensive compliance mechanism.

Earlier, as Union Sports Secretary and Director General of the Sports Authority of India, Injeti was instrumental in conceptualizing the Khelo India programme and overhauling the governance ecosystem of Indian sports.

Beyond his core administrative roles, Injeti has served on the boards of SEBI, LIC, and several state public sector undertakings, contributing to financial and corporate policymaking at the highest level.

Academic Credentials

Injeti earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC), Delhi University, before completing his MBA at Strathclyde Graduate Business School, UK. His academic grounding in economics and finance, combined with his regulatory expertise, positions him well to steer NSE through a transformative phase.

Strategic Significance of the Appointment

The appointment comes at a critical juncture for NSE, which is gearing up for its long-awaited Initial Public Offering (IPO). Market experts view Injeti’s leadership as a strong signal of reinforced governance and regulatory alignment—factors seen as essential for winning investor confidence and ensuring a seamless execution of the exchange’s listing ambitions.

By appointing a leader of Injeti’s calibre and experience, NSE is expected to accelerate reforms, deepen investor trust, and consolidate its standing as one of the world’s premier derivatives exchanges.
