Vedant Kumar and Kavinder Singh Negi Join CBI in Critical Investigative Roles

In a notable administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the deputation of two officers from the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax cadre) to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Both officers have been inducted at the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP), in a move that underscores the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the CBI’s investigative capacity with specialized domain expertise.

Vedant Kumar (IRS-IT:2016) Appointed SP, CBI

Vedant Kumar, a 2016-batch IRS (Income Tax) officer, has been appointed as Superintendent of Police in the CBI for an initial period of three years. His tenure will commence from the date he formally assumes charge or until further orders are issued, whichever is earlier.

Kavinder Singh Negi (IRS-IT:2015) Appointed SP, CBI

Similarly, Kavinder Singh Negi, a 2015-batch IRS officer, has been appointed as Superintendent of Police in the CBI for a tenure of four years, under comparable terms and conditions. His appointment too will take effect from the date of assumption of charge or until further directions are issued.

Strengthening CBI’s Investigative Capabilities

The deputation of IRS officers to the CBI forms part of a broader governmental strategy aimed at enhancing inter-service collaboration and bringing specialized knowledge into sensitive investigations. IRS officers, with their extensive expertise in taxation laws, financial forensics, and white-collar crime detection, are uniquely positioned to contribute to cases involving economic offenses, corruption, tax evasion, and large-scale financial frauds.

These appointments reflect the government’s recognition of the growing complexity of financial crimes and the need for investigators equipped with technical financial acumen. It is also consistent with long-standing practice whereby officers from diverse services—including the IRS, IPS, IAS, and other central services—are deputed to the CBI to assume investigative as well as administrative responsibilities.

By inducting officers such as Vedant Kumar and Kavinder Singh Negi, the CBI is expected to further sharpen its capabilities in tackling the expanding landscape of financial and economic crimes.
