Seasoned diplomat brings extensive experience to enhance India’s strategic partnership with Nigeria

The Government of India has named Abhishek Singh, a senior Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer from the 2003 batch, as the next High Commissioner to the Federal Republic of Nigeria — Africa’s largest economy and a key strategic partner for India on the continent.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) formally announced the appointment on Thursday. Mr. Singh, who currently serves as Joint Secretary in the MEA, will assume his new responsibilities in the near future.

MEA Issues Official Confirmation

In its official release, the MEA stated: “Shri Abhishek Singh (IFS:2003), presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

A Career Marked by Diplomatic Excellence

Mr. Singh, an IFS officer with over two decades of experience, has served in several high-stakes diplomatic roles across sensitive and strategically vital regions. His previous assignments include:

Ambassador to the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela (2020–2023)

Deputy Chief of Mission at the Embassy of India in Kabul

Counsellor at India’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, where he led efforts on peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and political affairs

His career reflects a strong command of geopolitical challenges, multilateral engagement, and bilateral diplomacy — making him well-suited to advance India’s interests in Nigeria.

Strategic Importance of the Role

India and Nigeria maintain strong bilateral relations, with significant collaboration in energy, trade, pharmaceuticals, education, and cultural exchange. As Africa’s largest economy and one of the world’s most populous nations, Nigeria holds considerable influence in the region.
