Raj Kamal Appointed India’s Next Ambassador to Eritrea: MEA Strengthens Strategic Engagement in the Horn of Africa

In a significant diplomatic development, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the appointment of Raj Kamal, a 2009-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as India’s next Ambassador to the State of Eritrea.

Currently posted at the Consulate General of India in Milan, Mr. Kamal is expected to assume his new assignment in Asmara shortly.

A Veteran Diplomat with Global Experience

Raj Kamal brings over a decade of distinguished service in international diplomacy. His previous postings include:

Second Secretary in Trinidad and Tobago

Second Secretary (Consular) in Argentina

Director (East & Southern Africa) at MEA headquarters in New Delhi

His tenure in Milan, coupled with his deep engagement in African affairs through the East & Southern Africa Division, positions him as a strategic choice to lead India’s mission in Eritrea.

Strengthening India–Eritrea Bilateral Relations

India and Eritrea formalized diplomatic ties in 1993, and the relationship has steadily grown through:

Capacity-building initiatives

Educational exchanges and scholarships under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program

Agricultural collaborations and trade agreements

Regular Foreign Office Consultations to deepen bilateral dialogue

India’s historical connection to Eritrea dates back to World War II, when Indian soldiers fought on Eritrean soil—adding a layer of historical resonance to contemporary ties.

Strategic Significance of the Appointment

Mr. Kamal’s appointment underscores India’s commitment to expanding its diplomatic footprint in Africa, particularly in the strategically vital Horn of Africa. Eritrea’s location along the Red Sea and its proximity to key global shipping routes make it a critical partner in India’s regional outreach. Through development assistance, technical cooperation, and educational support, India continues to foster goodwill and strategic alignment with Eritrea.

MEA’s Official Statement

The Ministry of External Affairs stated:

“Raj Kamal, presently posted in the Consulate General of India, Milan, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the State of Eritrea. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

This appointment marks another step in India’s evolving engagement with Africa, reinforcing its role as a reliable partner in regional development and diplomacy.
