Promotions Follow ACC’s Empanelment of 46 Officers for the 2025 Panel Year
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has promoted 45 senior officers of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS) to the rank of Principal Commissioner of Income Tax (Pr. CIT), effective from the date they assume charge. The promotions have been made in-situ, meaning the officers will continue in their current roles until fresh posting orders are issued.
This move follows the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) approval on September 13, 2025, which empanelled 46 IRS officers for elevation to Level 15 of the Pay Matrix, corresponding to the Principal Commissioner rank, for the 2025 panel year. Of the empanelled officers, 45 have now been promoted, while one case remains pending.
Strengthening Senior Leadership in the Income Tax Department
The large-scale promotions mark an important step in restructuring the senior cadre of the Income Tax Department. By expanding the pool of Principal Commissioners, the CBDT aims to strengthen leadership capacity across regions, support its administrative reforms, and enhance the Department’s ability to handle the growing responsibilities of tax administration, enforcement, and revenue generation.
