Major Reshuffle in UP Police: Four Senior IPS Officers Shifted, Raghubir Lal Becomes Kanpur Police Commissioner
The Uttar Pradesh Government has ordered a transfer of four high-ranking IPS officers, resulting in a leadership change in Kanpur and key adjustments at the CID and Security wings.
Raghubir Lal Takes Over Kanpur Police Commissioner Post
Raghubir Lal, a 1997-batch IPS officer who was serving as Additional Director General (Security), has now been named Commissioner of Police, Kanpur. He steps in to replace Akhil Kumar, who has been relieved from the post after a brief tenure of just one month.
Akhil Kumar Moved Out After Short Stint
Akhil Kumar, belonging to the 1994 batch, has been released from his Kanpur charge. His posting at the Centre continues, where he has already assumed responsibility as Managing Director and CEO of Digital India Corporation under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
Deepesh Juneja Relieved of CID Responsibility
Deepesh Juneja, a 1992-batch officer, has been divested of his role as Director General (Prosecution), CID. However, he will continue in his capacity as DG, Prosecution, Uttar Pradesh.
Mr. Juneja has had a long association with the prosecution cadre. Appointed ADG (Prosecution) in May 2023, he was elevated to DG (Prosecution) on January 1, 2025, while also handling the CID portfolio. The latest order withdraws his CID duties, allowing him to concentrate solely on prosecution-related work.
Vinod Kumar Singh Gets Additional Charge of CID
Vinod Kumar Singh, a 1994-batch IPS officer currently functioning as DG (Cyber Crime), has now been entrusted with additional charge of DG, CID.
Mr. Singh was promoted from ADG to DG on August 12, following the central deputation of Anand Swarup. Initially without a substantive posting, Singh was allotted the DG, Cyber Crime position and will now shoulder CID responsibilities as well.
Tarun Gaba Appointed IG (Security)
Another reshuffle saw Tarun Gaba, a 2001-batch officer, move into the role of Inspector General (Security). He will simultaneously retain his position as IG, Lucknow Range.
Mr. Gaba has witnessed several transfers in recent months. Previously Commissioner of Police, Prayagraj, he was shifted to the Lucknow Range as IG — a post he had held earlier. He also served in the Home Department as Secretary for an extended period. With his new appointment as IG (Security), he succeeds Raghubir Lal, while continuing to manage the Lucknow Range.
