IAS officer Surendra Singh (2005 batch, Uttar Pradesh cadre) has been reappointed as Secretary to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, following the completion of his three-year deputation at the Centre. His comeback to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO) is being seen as a move to strengthen top-level governance and streamline administrative coordination in the state.

Back in Lucknow After a Three-Year Gap

Singh is no stranger to the Chief Minister’s Office — he earlier served as Special Secretary during the COVID-19 crisis, where he was instrumental in planning, interdepartmental coordination, and emergency management. His reinstatement underlines the Chief Minister’s confidence in Singh’s ability to handle high-pressure assignments and his reputation for effective crisis leadership.

Experience at the National Capital

While on deputation, Singh was Secretary to the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. In that role, he dealt with urban governance challenges, large-scale civic coordination, and policy execution in the complex environment of the national capital. The exposure is expected to add value to his new responsibilities in Uttar Pradesh.

Administrative Career Highlights

A native of Mathura, Singh has held several critical assignments in Uttar Pradesh, each underscoring his capability in governance and administration. His previous postings include:

Divisional Commissioner, Meerut Division

Chief Executive Officer, Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority (GNIDA)

District Magistrate of Varanasi, Kanpur Nagar, Bareilly, Muzaffarnagar, and Pratapgarh

These roles established his reputation as a firm yet pragmatic administrator with strong execution skills.

Background and Credentials

Born on August 15, 1978, Singh holds a B.Sc. in Geology. Fluent in Hindi and English, he is widely acknowledged for his disciplined approach, integrity, and forward-looking administrative style.

A Trusted Officer for Strategic Roles

This marks Singh’s second tenure in the Chief Minister’s Office. His return is viewed as a calculated step by the Yogi Adityanath government to place an experienced officer in a pivotal role, particularly as Uttar Pradesh prepares for key policy implementations and governance reforms.
