Veteran officer with over 30 years of service, honoured twice with President’s Medals, entrusted with key leadership role in the national capital
The Ministry of Home Affairs has appointed Avtar Singh Shahi, a decorated Border Security Force (BSF) officer, as the Inspector General (IG) of the Delhi Frontier Headquarters. His elevation is being viewed as a major leadership move within India’s largest border-guarding force.
A Career Spanning More Than Three Decades
Shahi, who entered the BSF as an Assistant Commandant, has climbed the ranks over the last 30 years of service. Before this appointment, he was posted as IG of Frontier Headquarters – Special Operations, Odisha, where he managed sensitive operations requiring high-level coordination.
His career profile reflects extensive field command experience across border and internal security, including heading counter-terrorism and counter-infiltration missions in some of India’s most volatile regions, from Kashmir to the southern states.
Recipient of Prestigious National Honours
The Government of India has twice recognised Shahi’s contributions to national security. In August 2025, he received the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, one of the nation’s top policing awards. Earlier, in 2018, he was conferred the President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service.
His name figured prominently in the official honours list issued by the Home Ministry, a testament to his professional excellence, discipline, and commitment to duty.
Strategic Role at Delhi Frontier HQ
The Delhi Frontier Headquarters plays a crucial role in supervising deployments, ensuring operational readiness, and executing policy decisions at a strategic level.
As the new IG, Shahi will be tasked with strengthening operational efficiency, ensuring inter-unit coordination, and providing leadership in areas that directly impact the BSF’s functioning in the region. His blend of field expertise and strategic acumen is expected to bring greater effectiveness to the force’s operations.
Centre’s Vote of Confidence
Officials believe the appointment reflects the Centre’s strong trust in Shahi’s leadership abilities, particularly at a time when India’s border security and internal stability demand vigilant oversight and seamless command.
He is scheduled to assume charge shortly, marking the beginning of yet another significant chapter in his long and distinguished service.
