The Government of India has named Manish Gupta, a veteran officer of the 1998 batch of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), as the country’s next Ambassador to the Republic of Ireland, according to an announcement issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Friday.
From Ghana to Ireland: A New Diplomatic Chapter
Mr. Gupta is presently serving as the High Commissioner of India to Ghana, where he has played a key role in enhancing bilateral cooperation between India and several West African nations. He will soon assume his new post in Dublin, taking charge of India’s diplomatic mission to Ireland.
The MEA’s official statement read:
“Shri Manish Gupta (IFS: 1998), presently High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Ghana, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Republic of Ireland.”
Distinguished Diplomatic Career
With over 25 years of service, Mr. Gupta has built an extensive and diverse diplomatic portfolio, serving both in India and at several key international missions. His professional journey has taken him to New York, Brussels, Dakar, Istanbul, Sydney, and New Delhi, where he has represented India in various political, economic, and multilateral capacities.
During his tenure at the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations (New York) from 2009 to 2013, he served as Political Counsellor and Coordinator for India at the UN Counter-Terrorism Committee. He also represented India on the Executive Boards of UNDP and UNICEF, contributing to global policy deliberations.
Wide-Ranging International Assignments
Mr. Gupta’s overseas career includes notable leadership roles as Consul General of India in Istanbul (2013–2016) and Sydney (Australia). His earlier diplomatic assignments were in Brussels (2000–2002) and Dakar (2002–2005), where he managed political and consular responsibilities, deepening India’s engagement with Europe and West Africa.
Leadership Roles at MEA Headquarters
At the MEA headquarters, he served as Joint Secretary for Overseas Indian Affairs (2016–2019), where he supervised key areas such as migration policy, labour mobility, and welfare of Indian nationals abroad. He also headed the India Centre for Migration (ICM) as its Chief Executive Officer, steering research and strategy on global migration trends and diaspora policy. Earlier, between 2005 and 2009, he worked as a Desk Officer for Nepal in the Ministry’s Northern Division.
Academic Background and Personal Life
Manish Gupta is an alumnus of IIT-BHU (Banaras Hindu University), where he earned a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
He is married to Mrs. Nimeesha Gupta, and the couple is blessed with a son.
