Makwana’s Tenure Extended Under Supreme Court Guidelines

Top Court’s directives ensure leadership stability — Makwana removed from 2025 retirement list to continue as state police chief for two more years.

Bhopal: Madhya Pradesh Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana will remain in office until December 2026, following an official extension of his tenure in compliance with Supreme Court-mandated norms that guarantee a minimum two-year term for state police chiefs.

Supreme Court’s Directive Ensures Leadership Continuity

According to the state Home Department’s latest notification, Makwana’s continuation aligns with the Supreme Court’s judgment that mandates every DGP be granted at least two years in office, irrespective of their superannuation date. Initially, Makwana — appointed as DGP on December 1, 2024 — was slated to retire in December 2025. However, in adherence to the Court’s directive ensuring administrative stability and independence in police leadership, his name has been officially removed from the 2025 IPS retirement list.

The top court has long stressed that frequent changes in police leadership undermine consistency in law enforcement, affect morale, and disrupt long-term policing reforms. The Madhya Pradesh government’s move reflects a commitment to upholding these judicial principles.

Makwana’s Distinguished Career and Leadership

A 1988-batch IPS officer, Kailash Makwana has held several key positions throughout his distinguished service. Known for his strategic approach to maintaining law and order, he has spearheaded modernization drives, strengthened intelligence networks, and implemented innovative community policing initiatives.

His extended tenure is expected to bolster continuity in leadership, allowing ongoing reforms and modernization efforts within the Madhya Pradesh Police to progress without interruption.

Administrative Adjustments and Policy Compliance

Earlier, the Home Department had released a list of 17 IPS officers scheduled for retirement by December 31, 2025, which initially included Makwana. Following the Supreme Court’s guidelines and in the interest of maintaining administrative uniformity, the department made necessary revisions, formally extending Makwana’s service by one additional year.

Looking Ahead: Stability and Strategic Focus

The decision to retain DGP Makwana has been widely welcomed within the police and administrative circles. His continued leadership is seen as a step toward reinforcing professionalism, operational efficiency, and stability across the force.

With the extension in place, the Madhya Pradesh Police is expected to maintain its strategic momentum, focusing on crime prevention, modernization, and citizen-centric policing under Makwana’s experienced supervision.
