Centre Strengthens CBDT Leadership: Senior IRS Officers Mona Singh and Prasenjit Singh Recommended for Top Board Positions

In a major bureaucratic reshuffle within the Finance Ministry, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has proposed the names of two senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officers — Ms. Mona Singh and Mr. Prasenjit Singh — for appointment as Members of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). The CBDT serves as the highest policy-making and administrative authority of the Income Tax Department.

Government Finalizes Key Recommendations for CBDT

According to official sources, Ms. Mona Singh, who currently serves as the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Human Resource Development), and Mr. Prasenjit Singh, presently the Principal Director General of Income Tax (Training), have been recommended for elevation to the board.

Their nominations reflect the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the CBDT’s leadership team — an institution that plays a central role in shaping direct tax policies, monitoring compliance, and ensuring effective tax administration across the country.

Focus on Strengthening Governance and Institutional Capability

The appointment of Ms. Mona Singh and Mr. Prasenjit Singh underscores the government’s emphasis on building stronger leadership within the Income Tax Department. Both officers are known for their contributions to modernizing administrative systems and improving capacity-building mechanisms within the service.

Ms. Mona Singh has been at the forefront of implementing digital human resource reforms and fostering professional excellence among IRS officers. Her promotion to the CBDT is expected to bring renewed attention to personnel management, workforce planning, and administrative innovation.

On the other hand, Mr. Prasenjit Singh has successfully led multiple training reforms, introducing modern learning platforms and structured upskilling programs for tax officials. His inclusion in the board aligns with the Centre’s broader push toward knowledge-based governance and adaptive leadership.

Strengthening Policy and Reform Continuity

The CBDT, operating under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance, oversees all matters related to direct taxation — including policy formulation, enforcement, and digital transformation initiatives. These new appointments are seen as part of the government’s strategy to ensure continuity in tax reforms, improve taxpayer services, and deepen compliance-driven modernization.

The move also coincides with India’s sustained growth in direct tax collections, driven by greater transparency, technology integration, and a simplified compliance environment.

Driving the Next Phase of Tax Administration Reform

With both officers bringing extensive experience in training, governance, and human resource development, their induction is expected to create stronger coordination between policy-making and capacity-building functions within the CBDT.

By reinforcing the leadership at the top, the government aims to make the Income Tax Department more efficient, accountable, and future-ready — in line with its broader goals of enhancing ease of doing business and advancing digital governance.
