IAS Officer M. Angamuthu Assigned Additional Charge of Visakhapatnam Port Authority; To Oversee Two Major Indian Ports Simultaneously
In a significant administrative development within the maritime sector, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared a proposal from the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways to entrust Mr. M. Angamuthu, IAS (Assam-Meghalaya cadre, 2002 batch), with additional charge as Chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA).
Mr. Angamuthu is presently serving as Chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority (MbPA), one of India’s busiest and most strategically important ports. The new assignment positions him at the helm of two of the country’s key port infrastructures, reflecting the government’s confidence in his leadership, administrative experience, and ability to steer complex maritime operations.
According to the official order, the additional charge will be effective from September 22, 2025, to March 21, 2026, or until a regular appointment is made, or until further instructions are issued — whichever occurs earlier.
As part of this dual role, Mr. Angamuthu will oversee both Mumbai Port on the western coast and Visakhapatnam Port on the eastern seaboard — two critical nodes in India’s shipping, logistics, and international trade network. His responsibilities will include strategic management, policy execution, modernization initiatives, port efficiency enhancement, and coordination with central and state authorities to drive sustainable port development.
Known for his proactive administrative style, Mr. Angamuthu has held several key assignments across diverse sectors, including urban governance, infrastructure, and trade facilitation. His expanded role is expected to strengthen coordination between major ports, promote integrated maritime logistics, and support the government’s broader vision under the Maritime India Vision 2030 for transforming India into a global maritime hub.
The decision underlines the central government’s approach of entrusting seasoned IAS officers with cross-institutional responsibilities to ensure continuity, policy alignment, and efficient leadership in sectors of national economic importance.
