Central Government Approves Extensions for Two Senior IAS Officers Elevated to Additional Secretary Rank

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has granted approval for the continuation of two significant temporary upgradations, allowing senior IAS officers to continue serving in posts elevated to the rank of Additional Secretary. These extensions ensure administrative continuity in two crucial central institutions — the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the Cabinet Secretariat.

The Upgraded Position as Member (Administration), NHAI Extended

The ACC has approved the extension of the upgraded post of Member (Administration) in the National Highways Authority of India, which had earlier been elevated from the Joint Secretary level to the Additional Secretary level.
This post is currently occupied by Shri Vishal Chauhan, IAS (Sikkim cadre, 1998 batch).

With this decision, Chauhan will continue to serve at the enhanced rank until November 5, 2026. The extension underscores the government’s emphasis on maintaining high-level administrative oversight within NHAI, given the ongoing national highway expansion, expressway development, and large-scale infrastructure projects under implementation.

The Upgraded Position in the Cabinet Secretariat Extended Till 2026

Similarly, the ACC has approved an extension for the upgraded post of Joint Secretary elevated to the Additional Secretary level in the Cabinet Secretariat.
This role is presently held by Shri Rahul Sharma, IAS (Jharkhand cadre, 1998 batch).

The extension allows Sharma to continue operating at the higher designation until November 7, 2026, ensuring leadership stability within the Cabinet Secretariat — an institution central to inter-ministerial coordination, strategic governance, and handling sensitive administrative matters.

Why These Extensions Matter

Such temporary upgradations are typically granted to strengthen leadership in departments handling critical national functions. The ACC’s decision reflects the importance of continuity in senior-level administration as the government executes major infrastructure programs and strategic governance reforms.
