Centre Approves Redesignation of Deputy Secretary Post Held by IES Officer Sushant Sudan in Commerce Department

The Union Government has formally approved the redesignation of the post currently occupied by Mr. Sushant Sudan, an officer of the Indian Economic Service (IES), within the Department of Commerce. Mr. Sudan, who belongs to the 2012 batch of the Indian Economic Service, has been serving in the Department of Commerce under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

According to official sources, the restructuring involves a change in the nomenclature and status of the existing Deputy Secretary position, aligning it with the evolving administrative and functional requirements of the Department of Commerce. The redesignation is part of a broader effort by the government to rationalise posts, ensure optimal utilisation of specialised economic expertise, and strengthen policy formulation and implementation mechanisms within key economic ministries.

Mr. Sushant Sudan has been associated with several important policy areas related to trade, economic analysis, and commerce-related decision-making. As an IES officer, his role has involved providing critical economic inputs, data-driven assessments, and analytical support to senior policymakers, particularly in matters concerning domestic trade, international commerce, and economic planning.

Officials indicated that the redesignation does not merely reflect a change in title but also underscores the growing importance of economic and analytical roles within the Department of Commerce, especially at a time when India is actively engaging in trade negotiations, export promotion initiatives, and global economic forums.

The move is expected to enhance administrative clarity and better define responsibilities at the senior officer level, while also reinforcing the government’s commitment to leveraging domain-specific expertise in economic governance. Further details regarding the revised designation and associated responsibilities are likely to be communicated through a formal notification.
