UP Police Promotion Update: 10 IPS Officers of 2012 Batch Approved for DIG Rank, Major SSP Transfers Expected Across Key Districts

The Uttar Pradesh Police is poised for a significant administrative overhaul following the clearance granted by the Departmental Promotion Committee (DPC) for the elevation of ten Indian Police Service (IPS) officers from the 2012 batch to the rank of Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG). The decision was finalised in a recent high-level DPC meeting, and the formal promotion notifications are expected to be issued shortly by the state government.

Once the official orders are released, a series of consequential postings is anticipated, particularly at the level of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP). Several prominent districts, currently headed by officers who are set to move up the hierarchy, are likely to witness changes in their police leadership.

Senior District Police Chiefs Among Promotees

The list of officers approved for promotion includes IPS officers currently commanding some of Uttar Pradesh’s most strategically sensitive and high-profile districts. Notably, Raj Karan Nayyar, SSP of Gorakhpur, and Vipin Tada, SSP of Meerut, have been cleared for elevation. Their promotion is expected to lead to the appointment of new SSPs in these districts, triggering wider administrative movement within the state police establishment.

Other districts such as Saharanpur, Pilibhit, Lakhimpur Kheri, and Mirzapur are also likely to see changes in police leadership once the promoted officers assume higher responsibilities.

IPS Officers Cleared for DIG Promotion

The following 2012-batch IPS officers have been approved by the DPC for promotion to the DIG rank:

Raj Karan Nayyar – Senior Superintendent of Police, Gorakhpur

Vipin Tada – Senior Superintendent of Police, Meerut

Ashish Tiwari – Senior Superintendent of Police, Saharanpur

Sushil Chandrabhan – Senior Superintendent of Police, Special Task Force (STF)

Somen Verma – Superintendent of Police, Mirzapur

Performance-Based Elevation After Detailed Review

Sources familiar with the promotion process stated that the DPC conducted a comprehensive assessment of each officer’s service record, including length of service, professional conduct, leadership qualities, administrative competence, and performance in maintaining law and order. Officers currently serving at the Director General of Police headquarters were also found eligible based on their experience in policy formulation and senior-level administration.

Expected Post-Promotion Postings

Following their elevation to the DIG rank, the officers are likely to be entrusted with responsibilities as Range DIGs or assigned key roles at police headquarters, in accordance with service norms and administrative requirements. With SSPs from crucial districts such as Gorakhpur, Meerut, and Saharanpur moving to higher ranks, anticipation is growing over the next round of district-level appointments.

Strengthening UP Police Command Structure

The promotion of these experienced IPS officers ahead of the new year is being viewed as a move to reinforce the command and supervisory framework of the Uttar Pradesh Police. The reshuffle is expected to enhance strategic oversight, improve coordination at the range level, and contribute to more effective policing and law-and-order management across the state.
