Amit Kumar, IAS Elevated to Director-Level Private Secretary to Union Shipping Minister Sarbananda Sonowal; Re-Designation Approved Till August 2029
The Government of India has formally approved the elevation of Mr Amit Kumar, IAS (Bihar Cadre: 2012), by redesignating his current assignment in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. The post of Private Secretary attached to Union Minister Mr Sarbananda Sonowal has been upgraded from the Deputy Secretary level to the Director level exclusively for Mr Kumar.
As per the decision taken by the Competent Authority, the position presently held by Mr Amit Kumar will now carry the status of Private Secretary at the Director rank. This re-designation is being granted as a special personal measure in recognition of his service and will be applicable either from 1 January 2026 or from the date he formally assumes charge of the upgraded post—whichever occurs later.
The upgraded appointment will remain valid until 20 August 2029. However, the tenure may also end earlier depending on specific circumstances. These include the completion of the Minister’s term, Mr Kumar’s continuation in the role of Private Secretary, or any further administrative directions issued by the Government of India, whichever takes place first.
Officials clarified that the upgraded designation shall be co-terminus with the tenure of Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. It will also cease automatically if Mr Amit Kumar no longer functions as Private Secretary to the Minister or if subsequent government orders modify the arrangement.
Mr Amit Kumar’s central deputation tenure commenced on 21 August 2024 and continues to remain in effect.
