The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has cleared a major leadership reshuffle within India’s central armed police forces, approving two high-level appointments proposed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Under the decision, Shri Praveen Kumar, a 1993-batch Indian Police Service officer of the West Bengal cadre, has been selected as the new Director General of the Border Security Force (BSF). Prior to this elevation, he was serving as Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).
Shri Praveen Kumar will assume charge as DG, BSF at Level-16 of the Central Pay Matrix. His tenure will remain in effect from the date he formally takes charge of the post and will continue until 30 September 2030, which corresponds to his date of superannuation, or until further instructions are issued by the Government of India, whichever comes earlier.
In a reciprocal move, the ACC has appointed Shri Shatrujeet Singh Kapoor, a 1990-batch IPS officer of the Haryana cadre, as the new Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP). He will take over the position from Shri Praveen Kumar.
Shri Kapoor will hold the rank at Level-17 of the Central Pay Matrix. His term as DG, ITBP will be valid from the date he assumes charge of the post and will extend up to 31 October 2026, the date of his superannuation, or until further government orders are issued, whichever occurs earlier.
The leadership changes are expected to further strengthen command and operational coordination within India’s key border-guarding forces at a time when internal and external security challenges remain a top national priority.
