Cabinet Committee Extends Temporary Upgradation of Senior Posts in Science & Technology and Heavy Industries Ministries
In a notable administrative development, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has formally approved the continuation of temporary upgradations for two senior-level positions in the Government of India. This decision underscores the government’s emphasis on strengthening leadership within critical departments by retaining experienced officers at the rank of Additional Secretary.
The position of Deputy Secretary/Director in the Department of Science & Technology has been extended in its upgraded status to the level of Additional Secretary. This post is currently held by Shri Sunil Kumar, Indian Forest Service (Punjab Cadre, 1995 batch). The extension has been sanctioned until 8 January 2027, thereby ensuring that the department continues to benefit from his senior administrative expertise in advancing India’s science and technology initiatives.
Secondly, the post of Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Heavy Industries has also been extended in its upgraded capacity to the level of Additional Secretary. This position is presently occupied by Shri Hanif Qureshi, Indian Police Service (Haryana Cadre, 1996 batch). His tenure in the upgraded role has been approved until 7 January 2027, reinforcing the ministry’s leadership framework in overseeing industrial policy, manufacturing growth, and strategic initiatives in the heavy industries sector.
By extending these temporary upgradations, the government aims to provide enhanced administrative authority and continuity in leadership. Such measures are expected to strengthen policy execution and institutional efficiency in two vital areas—scientific advancement and industrial development—which are central to India’s long-term growth trajectory.
