ACC Extends Central Deputation of Sunil Kumar Barnwal as CEO of National Health Authority Until 2027
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has officially approved the extension of the central deputation tenure for Shri Sunil Kumar Barnwal, a senior IAS officer of the 1997 Jharkhand cadre. Shri Barnwal currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Department of Health & Family Welfare.
According to the official directive, the committee has cleared the proposal to retain the veteran administrator in his current role for an extended period, valid up to December 2, 2027, or until further orders are issued, whichever is earlier.
Continuity in National Healthcare Leadership
The decision to extend Shri Barnwal’s tenure comes at a critical juncture for India’s healthcare infrastructure. As the head of the National Health Authority, he oversees the implementation of flagship government schemes, most notably the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM).
His leadership is viewed as pivotal for the continued expansion of digital health records and the streamlining of insurance-based healthcare delivery to millions of citizens across the country.
A Seasoned Administrator
With a career spanning nearly three decades, the 1997-batch officer has held numerous key positions within the Jharkhand state government and at the Centre. This extension reflects the Central Government’s confidence in his administrative capabilities and ensures continuity in the strategic management of the nation’s primary health insurance and digital health initiatives.
