Former CBI Director JS Bawa Turns 100: Tricity IPS Fraternity Honours Veteran Police Leader in Chandigarh

The 100th birthday of veteran Indian police officer J. S. Bawa, former Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), was celebrated in Chandigarh with great respect and admiration by members of the police fraternity.

The special occasion was organised by the Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group, where several retired senior police officials gathered to honour Bawa’s remarkable contribution to India’s policing system and public service.

Celebration Held in Chandigarh

A brief but heartfelt ceremony was held on March 7, 2026, at the Punjab Police Officers Institute.

The event was attended by many retired senior police officers and dignitaries who came together to celebrate the life and achievements of the veteran officer.

During the ceremony, former Haryana Director General of Police S. S. Brar and former Punjab DGP D. S. Mangat honoured Bawa by presenting him with a shawl and a bouquet as a token of respect for his distinguished career in policing.

Presence of Former Top Police Officials

The celebration witnessed the presence of several prominent retired police leaders who gathered to pay tribute to the veteran officer.

Among the distinguished guests were:

V. K. Ahluwalia, former DGP of Himachal Pradesh

P. C. Dogra, former DGP of Punjab

Gurbachan Singh Jagat, former Governor of Manipur and retired IPS officer

Rishpal Singh, former Special Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, New Delhi

Dilbagh Singh, former DGP of Jammu and Kashmir

Baljit Singh Sandhu, former DGP of Haryana

Their presence reflected the deep respect Bawa commands within the Indian police community.

Distinguished Career of J. S. Bawa

J. S. Bawa belongs to the 1951 batch of the Indian Police Service from the Punjab cadre. Over the course of his long career, he served in several important leadership roles within India’s policing and investigative institutions.

One of his most notable positions was serving as the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation, the country’s premier investigative agency.

Bawa led the CBI for five years, during which he played a key role in strengthening investigative professionalism and institutional credibility.

Throughout his service, he held senior leadership positions in Punjab and other parts of the country and earned a reputation for integrity, discipline, and dedication to public service.

About the Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity

The Tricity IPS (Retd) Fraternity Group is a respected association of retired IPS officers based in the Tricity region, which includes Chandigarh, Mohali, and Panchkula.

The fraternity was established in 1986–87 with the objective of maintaining professional and social connections among retired senior police officers.

Today, the group includes more than 57 members, all of whom have served in key leadership roles in India’s policing and security institutions.

Interestingly, even at the age of 100, J. S. Bawa continues to remain actively associated with the fraternity and currently serves as its President, reflecting his enduring engagement with the police community.
