JNU Appoints IAS Rohit Kansal as Honorary Special Fellow; Teachers’ Association Alleges Statute Violation
A fresh controversy has erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) after the institution announced the appointment of senior IAS officer Rohit Kansal as an “Honorary Special Fellow.”
The Jawaharlal Nehru University Teachers’ Association (JNUTA) has strongly objected to the move, alleging that the post does not exist in the university’s statutes and that the appointment was made without the approval of the Executive Council (EC), which is the sole authority empowered to create posts and approve appointments under JNU regulations.
University Announcement
On March 10, 2026, JNU announced Kansal’s appointment through its official social media account on X (formerly Twitter).
The post stated that Vice Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit expressed delight over the appointment, describing it as recognition of Kansal’s distinguished service and expertise. He was appointed Honorary Special Fellow at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Centre for Security & Strategic Studies, which functions under the School of International Studies (SIS).
The announcement expressed hope that Kansal would contribute significantly to academic discussions and policy discourse at JNU.
Teachers’ Association Objections
In a press release issued on March 11, the JNUTA claimed that the appointment was illegal, as the position of “Honorary Special Fellow” does not exist in the university statutes.
The association argued that the Vice Chancellor had acted beyond her authority by making the appointment without EC approval. It demanded that the announcement be withdrawn immediately and that the Vice Chancellor clarify the legal basis of the decision.
