ACC Approves One-Year Extension of IPS Officer Piyush Anand’s Tenure as Director General of NDRF Until March 2027

The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to extend the tenure of Shri Piyush Anand, a senior officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS), Uttar Pradesh cadre, 1991 batch, as Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF).

According to the official order, Shri Anand’s tenure has been extended for a period of one year beyond 30 March 2026, i.e., up to 30 March 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier. The extension will be facilitated by continuing the upgradation of the post presently held by the officer to the level of Director General (DG) for a period covering the third year of his service in this capacity.

Background of the Officer

Shri Piyush Anand, IPS (UP:1991), has had a distinguished career spanning more than three decades in policing and public administration. His leadership in the NDRF has been marked by a focus on strengthening disaster preparedness, enhancing rapid response capabilities, and modernizing the force to meet the challenges of natural and man-made disasters.

The NDRF, functioning under the Ministry of Home Affairs, plays a critical role in disaster management across India. It is tasked with responding to floods, earthquakes, cyclones, industrial accidents, and other emergencies. As Director General, Shri Anand has overseen operations, training, and coordination with state governments and international agencies, ensuring that the force remains at the forefront of disaster response.

Significance of the Extension

The extension of Shri Anand’s tenure comes at a crucial time when India continues to face increasing vulnerabilities due to climate change, urbanization, and industrial expansion. His continued leadership is expected to provide:
• Operational continuity in disaster response strategies.
• Strengthened coordination between central and state agencies.
• Enhanced training and modernization of NDRF battalions.
• Improved community outreach and awareness programs for disaster preparedness.
