Santanu Kumar Agrahari Appointed NPPA Director; ACC Curtails Tenure as Minister’s PS
In a significant administrative move, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the appointment of Santanu Kumar Agrahari as Director in the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA), functioning under the Department of Pharmaceuticals.
New Role in NPPA
Santanu Kumar Agrahari, a 2012-batch IAS officer of the Jharkhand cadre, will take charge as Director in National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority.
His tenure will be effective from the date of assumption of charge and will continue until November 28, 2026, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
Tenure Curtailed as Minister’s Private Secretary
Prior to this appointment, Agrahari was serving as Private Secretary to V Somanna, Minister of State for Jal Shakti and Railways.
The ACC has approved the curtailment of his tenure in that role to facilitate his transition to the NPPA.
Importance of NPPA Role
The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority plays a crucial role in:
Fixing and regulating prices of essential medicines
Ensuring availability of affordable drugs
Monitoring pharmaceutical pricing policies
Enforcing provisions of the Drug Price Control Order (DPCO)
As Director, Agrahari will be involved in key policy and regulatory decisions impacting India’s pharmaceutical sector.
