Who Is Former IRS Officer K.G. Arunraj? Doctor-Turned Tax Sleuth Becomes Key Minister in Vijay’s New Tamil Nadu Government

Chennai: In one of the most remarkable political transitions in recent Tamil Nadu history, former Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer Dr. K.G. Arunraj has emerged as a prominent face in the newly formed Tamil Nadu government led by actor-turned-politician Vijay. A former rural doctor, senior Income Tax officer, and now cabinet minister, Arunraj’s journey reflects an unusual blend of public service, administrative experience, and political strategy.

Arunraj, regarded as one of the key architects behind the rise of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), was sworn in as a cabinet minister on May 10, 2026, after securing a decisive victory from the Tiruchengodu Assembly constituency in Namakkal district. He won the seat by a margin of 28,712 votes during the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections — an election that fundamentally altered the political landscape of the state.

From Rural Doctor to Public Servant

Born around 1979 in Salem district, K.G. Arunraj is the son of the late K.P. Ganesan. He pursued medicine at Madras Medical College and completed his MBBS degree in 2002 under The Tamil Nadu Dr. M.G.R. Medical University.

Before joining the civil services, Arunraj worked as a doctor for nearly five years in rural parts of Krishnagiri district. His years in village healthcare exposed him closely to issues such as poverty, inadequate medical infrastructure, administrative delays, and the struggles faced by ordinary citizens. Those experiences are said to have significantly shaped his understanding of governance and public administration.

Cracking UPSC and Joining the IRS

Determined to contribute on a larger administrative platform, Arunraj appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination and successfully cleared it in 2009. He subsequently joined the prestigious Indian Revenue Service.

Over the next 15 years, he served in the Income Tax Department across multiple states, including Tamil Nadu, Bihar, and Maharashtra. During his tenure, he built a reputation as a meticulous and result-oriented officer, particularly in financial investigations and tax enforcement operations.

Associated With Major Income Tax Investigations

K.G. Arunraj came into national prominence through his involvement in several high-profile Income Tax investigations.

Among the most notable was the 2016 raid on businessman J. Shekhar Reddy, where authorities reportedly recovered nearly ₹90 crore in cash and more than 100 kilograms of gold. The operation became one of the most talked-about tax raids in recent Indian history.

He was also linked to investigations connected with the Kodanadu Estate case and searches involving relatives and associates of V. K. Sasikala.

In 2021, while serving as Joint Commissioner of Income Tax during the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Arunraj was transferred by the Election Commission of India and attached to the Central Board of Direct Taxes.

Voluntary Retirement and Entry Into Politics

After an accomplished career in tax administration, Arunraj opted for voluntary retirement from the IRS in May 2025. His move immediately triggered speculation about a possible entry into active politics.

Soon after, in June 2025, Vijay appointed him as the General Secretary for Policy and Propaganda of Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Within the party, Arunraj quickly emerged as one of the principal policy strategists and organisational planners behind TVK’s election campaign.

Political observers believe his administrative expertise and governance background played a crucial role in strengthening TVK’s policy-oriented image during the elections.

TVK’s Historic Electoral Debut

The 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election proved historic for TVK. Contesting its first-ever Assembly election, the party secured 108 seats in the 234-member Assembly, ending decades of dominance by the state’s traditional Dravidian parties.

Although TVK fell short of the majority mark of 118 seats, the party received support from several allies, including the Indian National Congress, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, and Indian Union Muslim League.

Following the alliance support, Vijay met Governor R. N. Ravi and was invited to form the government.

Tiruchengodu Victory and Ministerial Oath

Arunraj contested the elections from Tiruchengodu constituency and secured a comfortable victory, further cementing his transition from bureaucrat to mass political leader.

On May 10, 2026, he took oath as a cabinet minister at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, where Governor R. N. Ravi administered the oath of office and secrecy.

Several other TVK legislators were also sworn in during the ceremony, including N. Anand, Aadhav Arjuna, K.A. Sengottaiyan, P. Venkataramanan, R. Nirmalkumar, Rajmohan, T.K. Prabhu, and S. Keerthana.

The swearing-in ceremony was attended by senior political leaders, members of Vijay’s family, and actress Trisha Krishnan.

Personal Life and Declared Assets

According to his election affidavit, Arunraj is around 46 years old as of 2026. His spouse is also a medical professional and currently serves as an Assistant Professor at Kilpauk Medical College.

His declared assets are estimated to be around ₹12.8 crore.

Why K.G. Arunraj’s Rise Is Drawing Attention

K.G. Arunraj’s rise has attracted widespread attention because of the diversity of roles he has successfully navigated throughout his career. From treating patients in remote villages to leading sensitive financial investigations and now entering the political executive, his trajectory is unlike that of most contemporary politicians.

With his administrative background, policy expertise, and close association with Vijay’s political project, Arunraj is expected to play a significant role in shaping governance priorities in the new Tamil Nadu administration.
