Who Is Praveen Sood? IIT-Delhi Graduate and Karnataka IPS Officer Gets Second Consecutive Extension as CBI Director Till 2027
The Central Government has approved a fresh one-year extension in the tenure of Praveen Sood as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), allowing the senior IPS officer to continue heading India’s premier investigative agency until May 24, 2027. The decision marks Sood’s second consecutive extension since he originally assumed office in May 2023.
The order formalising the extension was issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) following the recommendation of the statutory high-powered selection committee chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
A 1986-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Karnataka cadre, Praveen Sood succeeded former CBI Director Subodh Kumar Jaiswal and formally took charge on May 25, 2023. His original two-year tenure was due to end in May 2025, but the Centre granted him an extension last year after the selection panel reportedly failed to arrive at a consensus regarding a successor. With the latest decision, Sood will now remain in office until May 2027.
Rahul Gandhi Opposes the Extension Process
The decision, however, was not without controversy. Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi strongly objected to the extension process and submitted a formal dissent note during the selection committee meeting.
In his objection, Gandhi alleged that the appointment exercise had become a “mere formality” and claimed he was denied access to key documents related to eligible candidates, including self-appraisal reports and 360-degree performance evaluations. He stated that he could not discharge his constitutional responsibility through what he described as a biased and incomplete process.
Gandhi also accused the government of allegedly using the CBI against opposition leaders, journalists, and critics of the ruling establishment, making the extension decision politically sensitive.
How the CBI Director Is Appointed
Under Indian law, the appointment of the CBI Director is made by the Central Government based on recommendations from a three-member committee comprising:
The Prime Minister of India
The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha
The Chief Justice of India, or a Supreme Court judge nominated by the CJI
The mechanism was designed to ensure institutional balance, transparency, and bipartisan consultation in selecting the head of the country’s top investigative agency.
