In a major administrative reshuffle within the Tamil Nadu Police, senior IPS officer Asra Garg has been appointed as Inspector General of Police (IGP), Intelligence, Chennai — one of the most crucial and strategically sensitive postings in the state police establishment.
A 2004-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, Asra Garg was previously serving as IGP, North Zone, Chennai. With his latest appointment, he replaces Avinash Kumar, who is yet to receive a new posting from the state government.
The Intelligence Wing plays a critical role in monitoring law and order, political developments, communal tensions, extremist activities, and internal security issues across Tamil Nadu. Garg’s appointment comes at a politically significant time following the recent Assembly elections and the formation of a new government under Vijay.
Officer Known for High-Profile Investigations
Over the years, Asra Garg has earned a reputation as a proactive, field-oriented, and highly disciplined police officer known for tackling organised crime, illegal financial networks, caste conflicts, and crimes against women and children.
He came into the national spotlight in October 2025 when the Madras High Court appointed him to head a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the Karur stampede tragedy. The incident had claimed 41 lives during a political rally addressed by Vijay.
Although the SIT remained operational for only about 10 days, the case generated intense public and political attention before the Supreme Court of India stayed the SIT proceedings and transferred the investigation to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Despite the short duration of the probe, Garg’s selection to lead such a sensitive investigation reflected the confidence reposed in him by the judiciary and the state administration.
Crackdown on Drug Networks and Digital Crime
As IGP, North Zone, Garg supervised several major operations against interstate synthetic drug syndicates that were allegedly operating through digital platforms and online networks.
One of the most significant crackdowns during his tenure took place in Tiruvallur district, where police arrested multiple suspects, including foreign nationals, linked to narcotics distribution networks.
Police officials credit him with strengthening coordination between district police units and intelligence teams to track emerging organised crime patterns involving technology and cross-border links.
Landmark Action Under Women Protection Law
Asra Garg’s tenure also witnessed a landmark legal intervention under the amended Tamil Nadu Prohibition of Harassment of Women Act.
Under his supervision, police secured what is believed to be the country’s first protection order under the amended law in favour of a POCSO victim in Villupuram district. The case was widely noted for its victim-centric policing approach and speedy intervention mechanisms.
Early Life and Education
Born in Patiala, Punjab, Asra Garg completed his schooling in Mansa before pursuing engineering studies at Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology, formerly known as Thapar University.
He earned a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Electrical Engineering before clearing the UPSC Civil Services Examination and joining the Indian Police Service on September 6, 2004.

In another significant assignment, Garg played a major role in easing tensions between Dalit and non-Dalit communities in Uthapuram, an area that had witnessed long-standing caste-related divisions.
