Puri Rath Yatra 2026: Odisha Police Unveils Massive Security Plan With Elite Commandos, 8 Temporary Hospitals & 65 LED Screens
Ahead of the world-famous Rath Yatra in Puri, the Odisha Police has unveiled an extensive multi-layered security and emergency response plan aimed at ensuring safe and smooth movement of lakhs of devotees expected to participate in the annual chariot festival.
The large-scale security blueprint was reviewed and finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Yogesh Bahadur Khurania, Director General of Police (DGP), Odisha.
Officials said the comprehensive plan focuses on crowd control, anti-terror surveillance, emergency medical response, traffic regulation, evacuation preparedness and real-time monitoring during the festival, which is scheduled to be held on July 16, 2026.
Multi-Layered Security Deployment Across Puri
The Odisha Police administration has planned a massive deployment of security personnel, including elite tactical commandos and specialised crack teams, across sensitive and high-density locations in Puri.
Police officials stated that the security arrangements have been significantly strengthened following last year’s tragic stampede-like incident near the Gundicha Temple that resulted in casualties and injuries among devotees.
During the review meeting, DGP Khurania directed senior officers to implement special crowd-management mechanisms to prevent overcrowding and ensure rapid emergency response during the yatra.
As part of the operational strategy, a dedicated “special clearance party” will move ahead of the three chariots of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra along the Grand Road (Badadanda) to facilitate smooth movement and prevent congestion.
Eight Temporary Hospitals and 35 First-Aid Centres
Considering the intense heat, humidity and massive crowd turnout during the festival, Odisha Police and district authorities have also prepared a detailed Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for handling medical emergencies.
Under the emergency response plan:
Eight temporary hospitals will be established across Puri town
Around 35 first-aid centres will function at strategic locations
Emergency evacuation points will be created for rapid rescue operations Ambulances and medical response teams will remain on standby throughout the festival
Officials said the arrangements are aimed at providing immediate treatment to devotees suffering from dehydration, suffocation, heatstroke or other medical emergencies during the yatra.
65 LED Screens and Expanded CCTV Surveillance
To strengthen crowd monitoring and improve public communication, Odisha Police will install at least 65 LED screens across key areas of the city.
These screens will provide real-time information regarding crowd density and movement near the Jagannath Temple, Grand Road and adjoining areas so that devotees can avoid highly congested zones.
The police department has also ordered installation of additional CCTV cameras throughout the pilgrimage area to enhance surveillance and monitor suspicious activities.
Officials said integrated monitoring systems will be used for continuous tracking of crowd movement and security conditions during the event.
Crackdown on Criminal Elements and Enhanced Railway Security
In view of the possibility of criminal and anti-social elements entering Puri during the mega religious congregation, Odisha Police has initiated preventive surveillance and monitoring measures.
DGP Khurania directed officers to:
Conduct special drives against habitual offenders
Prepare detailed records and photographs of suspected criminals
Display photographs of wanted anti-social elements at railway stations and bus stands through LED displays
Intensify patrolling and vigilance in crowded public areas
Railway Police have also been instructed to strengthen security arrangements at major railway stations including Puri, Bhubaneswar, Khurda and Jatni.
Traffic Diversions and Additional Parking Facilities
Traffic management has been identified as another major focus area for Rath Yatra 2026.
Police officials said at least eight additional parking locations will be created around Puri city for pilgrims and tourists arriving during the festival.
Special traffic diversion plans, vehicle movement regulations and emergency access corridors are also expected to be implemented closer to the festival dates to ensure smooth movement of both devotees and emergency services.
Saumyendra Priyadarsi has been appointed as the overall in-charge of security arrangements for Rath Yatra 2026.
One of India’s Largest Religious Gatherings
The annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath is regarded as one of India’s largest religious gatherings, attracting lakhs of devotees, saints, pilgrims and international visitors every year.
Officials said exceptionally high footfall is expected during the 2026 festival, prompting the Odisha government and police administration to undertake one of the most extensive security and emergency preparedness exercises in recent years.
