Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam welcomed the government’s focus on food safety and hygiene but suggested that businesses should be given reasonable time to rectify deficiencies before facing severe action.
According to him, while strict implementation of food safety regulations is necessary, licensed establishments should receive an opportunity to improve compliance with FSSAI standards wherever possible.
Questions have also been raised about whether similar levels of enforcement were undertaken during the tenure of previous FDA Commissioners.
When asked to compare his approach with earlier administrations, Mundhe declined to comment.
Instead, he simply remarked:
“I’ll only speak about the work I do.”
