Srinagar-born Indian Forest Service (IFS) officer Sana Fayaz has added another remarkable milestone to an already inspiring journey by winning five prestigious awards at the convocation ceremony of the 2024 batch of the Indian Forest Service at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA), Dehradun. Her exceptional performance during training has earned her recognition as one of the academy’s standout probationers while reinforcing her reputation as one of the most promising young officers in the service.
An officer of the AGMUT cadre, Sana Fayaz is widely recognised as the first woman from the Kashmir Valley to join the Indian Forest Service (IFS) through the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Her achievement goes beyond personal success. It represents a historic breakthrough for women from the region and has become a source of inspiration for civil services aspirants, particularly those aspiring to build careers in environmental governance, forestry and wildlife conservation.

Sana Fayaz’s success holds significance far beyond individual accomplishment. She is believed to be the first woman from Kashmir Valley to enter the Indian Forest Service through the highly competitive UPSC examination, making history in one of India’s three prestigious All India Services, alongside the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS).
Her achievement carries special importance for Jammu and Kashmir, where relatively few candidates have traditionally opted for the Indian Forest Service despite the region’s immense ecological wealth and environmental significance.

She emphasised that the service allows officers to make meaningful contributions towards protecting natural resources while supporting sustainable development. Her message reflects a growing recognition of the increasing importance of environmental governance in addressing global and national challenges linked to climate change and biodiversity loss.
A Journey Built on Determination and Perseverance
Behind Sana Fayaz’s remarkable success lies a story of persistence, resilience and unwavering determination. A resident of Peer Bagh in Srinagar, she consistently displayed academic excellence while preparing for some of the country’s toughest competitive examinations.
In the UPSC Indian Forest Service Examination 2023, she secured All India Rank 12, emerging among the highest-ranked candidates in the country. However, her path to success was not without setbacks.
Like many successful civil servants, Sana faced disappointment during her initial attempts at both the UPSC Civil Services Examination and the Jammu & Kashmir Administrative Service (JKAS) examination. Instead of giving up, she continued preparing with renewed focus and determination. Her perseverance finally paid off in 2021, when she simultaneously cleared both examinations.
She secured Fourth Rank in the JKAS examination and also qualified the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2021, earning selection to the Indian Trade Service (ITS). She subsequently joined the Government of India as an Assistant Director General of Foreign Trade, beginning a promising career in the central civil services.
Passion for Environmental Conservation Led Her to IFS
Although she had already secured a prestigious Group ‘A’ Central Service, Sana Fayaz remained deeply committed to her long-standing interest in environmental conservation.
Instead of settling into her existing role, she continued preparing for the Indian Forest Service examination. Her dedication ultimately resulted in securing AIR 12 in the IFS examination and achieving her dream of joining one of India’s premier environmental services.

Strong Academic Foundation
Sana Fayaz’s educational journey reflects a sustained interest in science, technology and environmental issues. She completed her schooling at Presentation Convent Higher Secondary School, Srinagar, before pursuing a Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Srinagar.
Recognising the growing importance of environmental sustainability, she later pursued a postgraduate degree in Climate Change Studies, further strengthening her academic understanding of ecological systems, environmental policy and climate governance. This multidisciplinary educational background provided a strong foundation for her future career in forestry and environmental administration.
Begins Field Career in Jammu & Kashmir
After successfully completing her training at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy, Sana Fayaz has now been posted to the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir, where she will begin her field career as an Indian Forest Service officer. Her posting comes at a time when environmental issues are becoming increasingly important across the Himalayan region.
Jammu and Kashmir faces complex challenges relating to biodiversity conservation, sustainable forest management, climate resilience, watershed protection, wildlife conservation and ecological restoration.
As a young IFS officer, Sana Fayaz will now contribute directly to addressing these challenges while helping implement national and regional environmental policies.
Union Minister Calls New Officers Future Custodians of India’s Natural Heritage
Addressing the convocation ceremony, Union Minister Bhupender Yadav congratulated the graduating officer trainees and described them as the future custodians of India’s forests, wildlife and ecological heritage.
He expressed confidence that the new generation of Indian Forest Service officers would play a crucial role in realising the vision of Viksit Bharat 2047 through scientific forest management, environmental conservation, biodiversity protection and sustainable development.
The Minister underlined the growing importance of professional forestry leadership in responding to climate change, protecting ecosystems and ensuring balanced development.
