IAS Vishal Chauhan Gets One-Year Extension as NHAI Member (Administration) Till November 2027
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved a one-year extension in the central deputation tenure of 1998-batch IAS officer Vishal Chauhan, who is serving as Member (Administration) in the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. His tenure, which was scheduled to end on November 5, 2026, will now continue until November 5, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The decision has been communicated through an official order issued by the Secretariat of the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet under the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on September 24, 2026. The extension has been approved along with the continuation of the temporary upgradation of the post, allowing Chauhan to continue in his present assignment for another year.
ACC Approves One-Year Extension
According to the official communication, the ACC has approved the extension of Vishal Chauhan’s central deputation tenure for a period of one year beyond November 5, 2026. His extended tenure will run up to November 5, 2027, unless an earlier order is issued.
The order clearly states that the extension will be effective “beyond 05.11.2026”, with the revised end date fixed at November 5, 2027. However, the tenure is subject to the standard condition that it will continue only until further orders if such an order is issued before the specified date.
The approval also includes the continuation of the temporary upgradation of the post. This is an important part of the decision because the extension of the officer’s deputation is being accompanied by the continuation of the temporary higher-level status of the position he currently occupies.
Vishal Chauhan to Continue as NHAI Member (Administration)
Vishal Chauhan is currently serving as Member (Administration) in the National Highways Authority of India. NHAI functions under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and plays a central role in the development, management and implementation of major national highway projects across the country.
As Member (Administration), Chauhan’s responsibilities are linked to the administrative functioning of the authority. The position forms part of NHAI’s senior leadership structure, with the administrative side of the organisation involving matters related to personnel, institutional functioning and coordination across its large organisational setup.
His continued presence in the post for another year means that he will remain part of the senior management structure at NHAI beyond his earlier scheduled deputation period. The ACC’s decision therefore provides continuity in the administrative leadership of the authority.
1998-Batch IAS Officer
Vishal Chauhan belongs to the 1998 batch of the Indian Administrative Service and is from the Sikkim cadre, as reflected in the official order by the cadre code “SK:98”.
The officer’s current assignment is on central deputation. Such deputations allow senior IAS officers to work with Union government ministries, departments and major central organisations while bringing their administrative experience from the state cadre into national-level institutions.
For an organisation such as NHAI, which handles a substantial portfolio of national highway infrastructure, senior administrative experience is particularly relevant to the coordination of large-scale programmes and the functioning of a complex government authority.
Extension Comes Beyond November 5, 2026
The original tenure of Chauhan in his current central deputation assignment was due to end on November 5, 2026. With the latest ACC approval, he will now continue in the post for an additional year.
The new period will run from November 6, 2026, through November 5, 2027, subject to the condition that the appointment may end earlier if further orders are issued. This gives the government flexibility while formally extending the officer’s present assignment for another twelve months.
The decision also ensures that there is no immediate requirement for a change in the senior administrative position at NHAI when Chauhan’s existing tenure reaches its previously scheduled end. The temporary upgradation of the post will also continue during the approved extension.
Temporary Upgradation of Post to Continue
One of the notable elements in the ACC order is the reference to the continuation of the temporary upgradation of the post. The extension has not simply been approved as a continuation of the officer’s deputation; the order specifically provides for the temporary upgradation of the position to continue as well.
Temporary upgradation is an administrative arrangement that permits a post to be operated at a higher level for a specified period under approved conditions. In this case, the ACC has linked the continuation of that arrangement with Chauhan’s extended tenure as Member (Administration), NHAI.

Copies of the order have been circulated to a wide range of senior constitutional, administrative and government offices. These include the Cabinet Secretary, Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Secretary to the President of India, Secretary to the Vice President, Secretaries General of the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha Secretariats, and the Secretary, Department of Personnel and Training.
The communication has also been sent to all Secretaries to the Government of India as per the standard list, the Home Minister’s office, offices of all Union Ministers, the Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the officer concerned and Chief Secretaries of all states.
The Cabinet Secretariat has also been informed with reference to its relevant identification number dated September 24, 2026. Copies have additionally been marked to the Director General (M&C), FIB, the Editor, Civil Services News, the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, concerned personnel offices and the National Informatics Centre, DoPT.
Chauhan to Continue at NHAI Till November 2027
With the latest ACC approval, Vishal Chauhan will continue as Member (Administration), National Highways Authority of India, for another year beyond his existing tenure. His central deputation will now extend up to November 5, 2027, or until further orders, whichever is earlier.
The extension keeps the 1998-batch Sikkim cadre IAS officer in his present senior role within NHAI and also allows the temporary upgradation of the post to continue. The order does not announce any change in his designation or assignment, making it clear that Chauhan will continue in his existing position during the newly approved period.
