Who Is Urmi Sinha? Youngest IPS Officer Who Cracked UPSC at 21 with AIR 170; Know Her Andhra Pradesh Cadre Posting

Urmi Sinha, a 2025-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer, has drawn widespread public attention after completing her Phase-I basic training at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA) in Hyderabad. Having cracked the highly competitive Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) Civil Services Examination 2024 in her very first attempt at the age of 21, she secured an All India Rank (AIR) of 170.

On October 17, 2026, Sinha stood alongside her peers in the passing-out parade of the 78th regular recruit batch. The passing-out contingent comprised 135 Indian IPS probationers—including 37 women—and 16 foreign officer trainees representing Nepal, Bhutan, and the Maldives.

Early Life, Family Background, and Education

Born on February 11, 2003, Urmi Sinha was raised in Howrah, West Bengal, where she completed her primary and secondary schooling.

Key Personal & Academic Details:

Family Roots: While her family’s ancestral roots trace back to Marwari Tola in Haveli Kharagpur, located in Bihar’s Munger district, her family subsequently relocated to West Bengal.

Parentage: Her father, Dr. Ranjit Sinha, is a practicing pediatrician in Howrah, while her mother is a homemaker.

Undergraduate Studies: She pursued a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Political Science at St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata, graduating in 2023.

Immediately following the completion of her graduation, Sinha initiated full-time preparation for the Civil Services Examination. Preparing directly from her home in Howrah, she leveraged structured self-study routines alongside online guidance modules rather than relocating to conventional coaching hubs.

The UPSC Journey: AIR 170 on First Attempt

Sinha’s rapid trajectory through the three-stage selection framework—comprising the Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Personality Test—culminated in an All India Rank of 170.

By clearing the examination at the age of 21, Sinha became the youngest probationer in the SVPNPA’s 78th regular recruit batch. Her early entry into the police service places her among a small group of young civil servants nationwide who have entered executive policing directly out of university.

Cadre Allocation and Next Steps in Andhra Pradesh

Following her appointment to the Indian Police Service, Urmi Sinha has been formally allotted the Andhra Pradesh Cadre.  With the formal conclusion of Phase-I institutional training in Hyderabad, Sinha is set to report to her allotted state cadre to undertake extended field training. During this practical phase, probationers serve as district-level trainees, gaining hands-on administrative exposure across key operational areas:

District law and order maintenance

Station-level crime investigation protocols

Field policing and community engagement

Revenue, judicial, and inter-departmental coordination

Official district posting orders will be formally issued by the Government of Andhra Pradesh upon her reporting to state headquarters.
