Seasoned Diplomat Set to Bolster India–Nigeria Strategic Partnership

The Government of India has appointed Abhishek Singh, a senior 2003-batch Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer, as the next High Commissioner of India to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Nigeria, Africa’s largest economy, is a key strategic partner for India on the continent.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced the appointment on Thursday, confirming that Singh, who is currently serving as Joint Secretary in the MEA, will assume charge in Abuja shortly.

In its press release, the MEA stated:

“Shri Abhishek Singh (IFS:2003), presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is expected to take up the assignment shortly.”

Abhishek Singh: A Distinguished Career in Diplomacy

Over his two-decade career, Singh has held several critical diplomatic assignments in conflict-sensitive and strategically important regions. His past postings include:

Ambassador to Venezuela (2020–2023)

Deputy Chief of Mission, Embassy of India in Kabul

Counsellor, Permanent Mission of India to the UN, where he dealt with peacekeeping, counter-terrorism, and political affairs

His career reflects a strong grasp of geopolitical complexities, multilateral diplomacy, and bilateral engagement — skills that will be vital in his new role in Nigeria.
