State Government Reassigns Senior IAS Officers to Strengthen Urban Management and Environmental Policy

In a significant bureaucratic reshuffle, the West Bengal government has appointed two senior IAS officers to crucial positions aimed at bolstering both urban governance and environmental planning.

Aditi Chaudhary to Lead Asansol Municipal Corporation

Aditi Chaudhary (IAS:2014:WB) has been appointed as the Commissioner of Asansol Municipal Corporation. In addition to this role, she will also serve as the Chief Executive Officer of the Asansol Durgapur Development Authority (ADDA).

Prior to this posting, Chaudhary was serving as Special Secretary in the Department of Women & Child Development and Social Welfare, where she was known for her proactive administration and effective implementation of welfare schemes.

Her dual responsibility places her at the center of Asansol’s urban development and civic management, especially at a time when the state is pushing for accelerated infrastructure growth. As CEO of ADDA, she will also oversee planned urban expansion, zoning regulations, and infrastructure projects across the industrial belt of Asansol-Durgapur.

Saurav Pahari to Head Institute of Environmental Studies & Wetland Management

Senior officer Saurav Pahari (IAS:2008:WB) has been appointed as the Director of the Institute of Environmental Studies & Wetland Management (IESWM), West Bengal, following his premature repatriation from central deputation.

Until recently, Pahari was serving as Deputy Chairperson of the Tea Board of India in Kolkata under central deputation. His return marks a shift in focus toward state-level environmental governance, particularly the conservation and sustainable management of wetlands and ecological habitats.

Given his administrative acumen and experience in policy formulation at the central level, Pahari is expected to play a pivotal role in strengthening scientific research, ecological planning, and wetland preservation efforts under the IESWM.
Strategic Realignment for Improved Governance

These appointments signal the West Bengal government’s strategic effort to realign administrative leadership in key sectors. While Chaudhary’s posting enhances the focus on urban and industrial development, Pahari’s return underlines the growing emphasis on climate resilience and environmental sustainability.

Together, these decisions reflect a broader commitment to streamlining governance and delivering targeted outcomes across urban and ecological domains in the state.
