IRS Officer Alok Malviya’s Tenure Extended in Department of Commerce; ACC Approves One-Year Extension Under Central Staffing Scheme

In a recent administrative decision, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has given its formal approval to extend the central deputation tenure of Mr. Alok Malviya, an officer of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), 2006 batch, who is currently serving as Director in the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

According to the official order issued by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Mr. Malviya’s tenure under the Central Staffing Scheme (CSS) has been extended by one year, beyond October 12, 2025, and will now continue up to October 12, 2026, or until further orders are issued — whichever comes earlier.

Mr. Malviya, who has been on central deputation since October 13, 2020, has played a key role in formulating and coordinating various trade and commerce-related policies. As Director in the Department of Commerce, he has been closely associated with strategic policy planning, export promotion initiatives, multilateral trade negotiations, and industrial coordination under the guidance of Mr. Rajesh Agarwal, Secretary, Department of Commerce.

This extension indicates the government’s recognition of Mr. Malviya’s professional competence, policy insight, and consistent contributions to the department’s ongoing reform and modernization agenda. During his tenure, he has been involved in several flagship initiatives aimed at boosting India’s trade competitiveness, improving ease of doing business, and facilitating greater participation of Indian industries in global value chains.

Officials familiar with the development note that such tenure extensions are typically granted to ensure continuity in policy implementation, especially in departments handling critical sectors like trade, exports, and economic diplomacy. Mr. Malviya’s extended term will allow him to continue steering several long-term projects and negotiations that are currently in advanced stages.

The order, signed and released from New Delhi by the Department of Commerce, underscores the government’s approach of retaining capable officers in key policy-making positions to strengthen administrative stability and institutional expertise within the central bureaucracy.
