IPS Alok Singh: From Anti-Naxal Operations to Urban Policing Reforms — The ADG Transforming Law Enforcement in Uttar Pradesh

IPS officer Alok Singh, a 1995-batch member of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, currently serves as the Additional Director General (ADG) of the Kanpur Zone, where he is widely credited for implementing disciplined policing, strengthening crime-prevention mechanisms, and advancing citizen-centric law enforcement. Known for his composed leadership style and transparent working approach, Singh has built a distinguished career across some of the most demanding postings in the state.

Distinguished Operations Against Insurgency and Arms Recovery

One of the most defining chapters of his career unfolded in the early 2000s when he spearheaded a high-impact mission against Naxalite groups in Sonbhadra, a district grappling with insurgent influence at the time. Under his command, security forces dismantled three major Naxalite area committees and successfully recovered firearms looted from government armouries. The operation, executed with precision and minimal collateral damage, earned him the President’s Police Medal for Gallantry in 2002, a national recognition of his courage and professional excellence.

Strong Academic Foundation and Global Exposure

Mr. Singh’s academic achievements complement his field expertise. He holds formal degrees in Physics, Mathematics, and Economics, in addition to completing an MBA in Marketing and Finance. To deepen his understanding of global policing systems, he undertook advanced training in Italy and pursued specialised leadership and administrative coursework at Cambridge University, UK. He is also widely appreciated for mentoring newly inducted IPS probationers, contributing to capacity-building within the police service.

Architect of Modern Policing in Noida

In 2020, Alok Singh made history as the first Police Commissioner of Gautam Buddha Nagar (Noida) following the introduction of the commissionerate system in Uttar Pradesh. His tenure laid the foundation of a more accountable and technology-driven policing structure in one of the state’s most rapidly expanding urban regions. Initiatives introduced under his leadership significantly improved response times, transparency, and public interface systems.

Decisive Crackdowns on Terror Modules and Organized Crime

Across Saharanpur, Kanpur, Farrukhabad, Etawah, and neighbouring districts, Singh has consistently led operations that targeted entrenched criminal syndicates and extremist networks. His teams dismantled multiple gangs involved in organised theft, including the arrest of a major auto-lifting network responsible for widespread vehicle robberies. Authorities recovered 21 stolen two-wheelers, alongside illegal weapons, in a series of coordinated raids.

Under his zonal leadership, police teams invoked the Goonda Act and Gangster Act against 127 offenders in Auraiya, Kanpur Dehat, and Jalaun, simultaneously confiscating assets worth several crores. These actions significantly disrupted the economic foundations of criminal networks in the region.

Championing Innovation and Public-Centric Policing

Through a combination of strategic foresight, operational discipline, and a deep commitment to community welfare, IPS Alok Singh has emerged as one of Uttar Pradesh’s most influential law enforcement leaders. His ongoing contributions reflect a broader shift toward professional, tech-enabled, and people-focused policing in the state.
