In a decisive push for judicial efficiency and improved law enforcement, Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Kumar (IPS: 1991 batch) has proposed the creation of 100 fast track courts to expedite the resolution of serious criminal cases. Addressing a press conference in Patna, the DGP stated that a formal proposal has been submitted to the state government to address the backlog of cases related to murder, robbery, and dacoity.
Kumar emphasized that fast track courts had previously proven effective—particularly prior to 2011—and reviving them is essential for ensuring swift and effective justice.
Crackdown on Criminals and Corrupt Officers
Highlighting an intensified crackdown on criminal elements, the DGP noted that 1,172 individuals have been identified for property confiscation under ongoing legal proceedings. Confiscation proposals have already been filed against 188 accused, with courts ordering seizures in four cases so far.
He further reported that the state’s zero-tolerance policy on corruption is producing results, with over two dozen corrupt police officers apprehended by vigilance teams in recent months.
Decline in Murder Cases Reflects Policing Efforts
Referring to the state’s improving law and order situation, DGP Kumar highlighted a substantial reduction in murder cases—from 4,000 in 2004 to 2,400 in 2024—a testament to the consistent and strategic efforts of the Bihar Police. However, he cautioned that “even a single murder is unacceptable,” reaffirming every citizen’s right to life and safety.
Preparations for Prime Minister’s Visit
In light of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit to Bihar on June 20, Kumar assured that comprehensive site inspections and security reviews have been conducted under the Chief Secretary’s guidance. He confirmed that adequate security personnel have been deployed to ensure a safe and incident-free event.
