In a significant cadre elevation exercise, the Government of India has promoted seven officers from the Chhattisgarh State Administrative Service (SAS) to the Indian Administrative Service (IAS). The appointments were formally notified by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) on Tuesday.

The promotions have been effected under the 2024 selection list and are intended to fill vacancies that arose between January 1, 2024, and December 31, 2024. All seven officers have been appointed to the IAS on probation and allocated to the Chhattisgarh cadre.

Officers Elevated to the Indian Administrative Service

The following Chhattisgarh SAS officers have been inducted into the IAS:

Tirathraj Agrawal

Leena Kosam

Saumil Ranjan Choubey

Birendra Bahadur Panchbhai

Sumit Agrawal

Sandeep Kumar Agrawal

Ashish Kumar Tikariha

Their elevation represents a major milestone in their professional careers, transitioning them from the State Administrative Service into the country’s premier civil service.

Part of the 2024 IAS Promotion Quota

The promotions have been made under the annual selection mechanism through which eligible State Administrative Service officers are inducted into the IAS against vacancies earmarked for promotion quota. These vacancies pertain to the calendar year 2024 and cover positions that became available within the specified period.

The process of induction typically involves recommendations by the state government, scrutiny by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC), and final approval by the Central Government, culminating in the formal notification issued by the DoPT.

Appointment on Probation and Cadre Allocation

As per established service rules, all seven officers have been appointed to the IAS on probation. This is a standard procedure applicable to officers inducted through the promotion channel. During the probationary period, their performance and suitability for long-term service in the IAS cadre will be assessed in accordance with applicable regulations.

The officers have been assigned to the Chhattisgarh cadre, ensuring their continued service within the state. As IAS officers, they will be eligible for postings in senior administrative, developmental, regulatory, and policy-making positions at the district, departmental, and state secretariat levels. Over time, they may also be considered for central deputation assignments.

Strengthening IAS Cadre in Chhattisgarh

The induction of these seven officers enhances the sanctioned strength of the IAS cadre in Chhattisgarh and contributes to continuity in governance and administrative leadership. Promotions from the State Administrative Service to the IAS play a crucial role in maintaining institutional experience within the cadre, as such officers bring extensive field-level administrative exposure.

By elevating experienced SAS officers to the IAS, the government seeks to reinforce administrative capacity, improve policy implementation, and ensure effective delivery of public services across the state.

The latest notification reflects the ongoing efforts of the Central Government to fill promotional vacancies in a timely manner and maintain optimal cadre management across states.
