The Central CEN Cybercrime Police have initiated a probe after fraudsters allegedly impersonated a senior IAS officer on WhatsApp to solicit money from government employees.

Kishore R from the Department of Industries and Commerce filed a complaint revealing that multiple staff members received WhatsApp messages on Monday from a phone number with Vietnam’s country code (+84). The account featured the name and photograph of 51-year-old Gunjan Krishna, the department’s commissioner.

As per the FIR, the impersonator—pretending to be Krishna—tried to extort money using misleading messages. The complainant confirmed that the number was fraudulent and had no association with the officer.

A case has been registered under Section 66C of the Information Technology Act.
