Finance Ministry Begins Interviews for CBDT Member Posts; 15 Senior IRS Officers Compete for Three Key Vacancies
The Ministry of Finance has begun the crucial selection process for appointing three new Members to the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), the country’s apex policymaking body for direct taxes. A high-powered selection committee has started interviewing 15 senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS-Income Tax) officers drawn from the 1990, 1991 and 1992 batches, with the successful candidates set to occupy some of the most influential positions in India’s tax administration.
The interviews, which commenced on Wednesday, are being conducted over two days. Five officers appeared before the selection panel on the opening day, while the remaining ten candidates are scheduled to face the committee on Thursday. Once the interviews conclude, the panel is expected to finalise its recommendations, paving the way for the appointment of three new Members to the CBDT.
The selection exercise is being closely watched within the Income Tax Department, as appointments to the CBDT represent one of the highest career milestones for officers of the Indian Revenue Service. Members of the Board play a central role in shaping India’s direct tax policy, strengthening tax administration and steering key reforms in the country’s revenue system.
Senior IRS Officers from Three Batches in the Race
The competition for the three coveted positions includes experienced officers from three successive senior batches of the IRS (Income Tax). According to official sources, the shortlisted candidates comprise:
Four officers from the 1990 batch
Seven officers from the 1991 batch
Four officers from the 1992 batch
These officers bring decades of administrative, investigative and policy experience acquired through postings across the Income Tax Department, the Ministry of Finance and other important government organisations.
The interviews are expected to assess not only the officers’ professional achievements and administrative capabilities but also their leadership qualities, strategic vision and ability to contribute to policy formulation at the highest level. With only three vacancies available, the selection process is expected to be highly competitive.
Selection Exercise Expanded After Third Vacancy
The current recruitment exercise has undergone an important expansion since it was first initiated. Initially, the government had invited applications from 20 eligible IRS officers to fill two vacant Member posts in the CBDT.
However, the situation changed after another vacancy became available owing to the impending retirement of G. Aparna Rao (IRS-IT:1989), who is scheduled to retire at the end of August 2026.
Following the creation of this additional vacancy, the government invited five more eligible officers to participate in the selection process. This increased the total number of shortlisted candidates to 15, who are now competing for three Member positions.
The expansion of the recruitment exercise has widened the field of competition while ensuring that all eligible senior officers receive an opportunity to be considered for appointment to the Board.
Two-Day Interview Process Underway
The high-level selection committee began the interview process on Wednesday by interacting with five shortlisted officers. The remaining ten candidates are scheduled to appear before the panel on Thursday, after which the committee is expected to prepare its final recommendations.
The recommendations will subsequently be processed through the established appointments mechanism before the government announces the names of the officers selected to join the CBDT.
Although the interviews form the final stage of the selection exercise, the officers have already undergone a rigorous eligibility screening before being shortlisted for consideration.
Appointments to the Board are based on a combination of seniority, service record, professional competence, integrity and leadership experience.
CBDT: India’s Apex Direct Tax Policymaking Body
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) functions under the Department of Revenue in the Ministry of Finance and serves as the highest authority responsible for administering India’s direct tax system.
The Board is headed by a Chairman and can have up to six Members, each entrusted with specific functional responsibilities covering different aspects of direct tax administration.
These areas include:
Formulation of direct tax policy
Administration of income tax laws
Revenue collection and monitoring
Investigation and enforcement
Taxpayer services and grievance redressal
Legal affairs and judicial matters
CBDT also plays a crucial role in framing regulations, issuing policy directions, monitoring tax compliance and implementing reforms aimed at improving efficiency, transparency and ease of doing business. Its decisions have a direct bearing on tax administration across the country and influence both taxpayers and the broader economy.
Strategic Role in India’s Revenue Administration
As the country’s apex direct tax authority, the CBDT occupies a central position in India’s fiscal architecture. The Board supervises the functioning of the Income Tax Department, formulates administrative policies, oversees implementation of direct tax laws and guides major initiatives relating to digital taxation, taxpayer services, enforcement actions and dispute resolution.
Its Members work closely with the Ministry of Finance on legislative proposals, tax reforms, compliance strategies and measures to improve revenue mobilisation while balancing taxpayer convenience.
Given the increasing complexity of India’s tax ecosystem, the role of CBDT Members has expanded considerably in recent years. They are expected to provide strategic direction on issues ranging from technology-driven tax administration and data analytics to international taxation, transfer pricing, litigation management and anti-tax evasion measures.
Prestigious Career Milestone for IRS Officers
For officers of the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax), appointment as a Member of the CBDT represents one of the most distinguished achievements in their professional careers.
Only a limited number of senior officers reach the Board after decades of service across diverse assignments involving assessment, investigation, intelligence, policy formulation, international taxation and departmental administration.
Selection to the CBDT places officers at the heart of India’s direct tax policymaking process, where they help shape administrative reforms, oversee national-level initiatives and guide the functioning of one of the country’s largest revenue-collecting organisations.
With the interview process now underway, the shortlisted officers await the outcome of one of the most significant selection exercises in the Income Tax Department. Once the recommendations of the selection committee are approved by the government, the newly appointed Members will join the CBDT at a time when India’s direct tax administration continues to undergo rapid technological transformation, policy modernisation and increasing emphasis on taxpayer-centric governance.
