From battling odds to securing AIR 48 in UPSC, her remarkable story of resilience and determination continues to inspire millions

In one of the most moving episodes of Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) Season 17, IAS officer Ayushi, who is visually impaired, captivated host Amitabh Bachchan and millions of viewers across the country with her extraordinary life story. Her journey—rooted in perseverance, resilience, and the unwavering support of her mother—stood out as a testament to how determination can triumph over adversity.

A Memorable KBC Moment

Ayushi earned her place on the coveted hot seat by winning the Fastest Finger First round. What followed was an unforgettable moment—Mr. Bachchan himself gently guided her to the chair, a gesture of warmth and respect that brought emotional depth to the show. “This will always remain etched in my memory,” Ayushi said, recalling how her family had often described the joy of watching KBC to her, since her visual impairment had prevented her from experiencing it firsthand.

In a lighter moment, Ayushi playfully remarked: “People often tell me about you—how tall you are, how striking your features are, and how handsome you look.” The megastar, visibly moved, responded with heartfelt admiration, calling it his privilege to host her.

A Mother’s Sacrifice, A Daughter’s Dream

Accompanying Ayushi on stage was her mother, Asha Rani, who shared the struggles of her daughter’s early life. Born with severe visual impairment and other health complications, Ayushi could only perceive faint, blurry light in her childhood—an ability that gradually diminished. Yet, her spirit remained unbroken.

“My mother gave up her career to stand by me,” Ayushi revealed emotionally. “She recorded my textbooks, helped me study through Braille, and ensured that my disability never became a barrier.” Those sacrifices, she said, were the foundation of her success.

From Lecturer to IAS: A Dream Realised Against All Odds

Ayushi’s journey to the civil services is nothing short of inspiring. A 2022-batch IAS officer of the AGMUT cadre, she currently serves as Assistant Collector in North Goa. She achieved All India Rank 48 in the prestigious UPSC Civil Services Examination, an achievement made even more extraordinary given her personal challenges.

Before donning the mantle of an IAS officer, Ayushi worked as a lecturer for over a decade, balancing her teaching career with the grueling demands of UPSC preparation.

The Foundation of Grit and Learning

Born on August 27, 1992, in Rani Khera, Northwest Delhi, Ayushi pursued her schooling at Deen Bandhu Sir Chotu Ram Public School. She later earned a B.A. in Hindi and English from Delhi University and an M.A. in History from IGNOU. Despite her disability, she took up teaching assignments in various Delhi schools until 2019, continuing her UPSC preparation alongside her professional responsibilities.

Five Attempts, One Triumph

Ayushi’s road to success was long and challenging. She appeared for the UPSC Civil Services Examination five times, each attempt strengthening her strategy and resilience. Her disciplined schedule, keen subject mastery, and unyielding resolve finally culminated in her success in 2022, when she secured her place in the IAS.

Service, Purpose, and the Road Ahead

Since joining the IAS in May 2023, Ayushi has been dedicated to inclusive governance and community-driven development in North Goa. Her life’s story, which has already inspired countless differently-abled aspirants, is a powerful reminder that disability is not incapacity, and that persistence, supported by love and sacrifice, can achieve the extraordinary.

As Amitabh Bachchan summed up during the KBC episode, Ayushi is not just an officer—she is a symbol of courage, dignity, and hope.
