Ladakh Strengthens Student Mental Health Framework: IAS Officer Bhanu Prabha Appointed Nodal Officer to Coordinate National Task Force

In a landmark administrative initiative aimed at addressing the growing concerns of student mental health and suicide prevention, the Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Kavinder Gupta, has appointed IAS officer Bhanu Prabha (AGMUT cadre, 2015 batch) as the Nodal Officer to coordinate with the National Task Force on Student Mental Health. The official order, issued on Saturday, places her at the forefront of Ladakh’s efforts to build a robust and supportive framework for student well-being.

 Appointment in Line with Supreme Court Directions

This appointment is in direct compliance with the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India’s judgment dated 24 March 2025 in Criminal Appeal No. 1425/2025 (SLP Crl. No. 13324/2024).

The Supreme Court had directed the constitution of a National Task Force to strengthen mechanisms for mental health support and suicide prevention among students.

Acting on these directives, the UT Administration of Ladakh has designated Smt. Bhanu Prabha, IAS, currently serving as Administrative Secretary of the Higher Education Department, as the officer responsible for coordinating all Union Territory-level initiatives with the Task Force.

Key Responsibilities of the Nodal Officer

As the designated Nodal Officer, Bhanu Prabha will undertake critical responsibilities, including:

Coordinating with the National Task Force on matters of student mental health and wellness.

Streamlining policies and institutional support systems specifically designed for suicide prevention.

Facilitating the implementation of actionable guidelines across schools, colleges, and universities in Ladakh.

Working in close collaboration with the Departments of Higher Education, School Education, Technical Education, and Skill Development to ensure a unified approach.

This role positions her as the central link between Ladakh’s educational institutions and the national framework for student mental health.
