Immersive Field Learning: Young IAS Trainees Discover Rural Progress, Cultural Heritage, and Local Enterprise
A group of trainee IAS officers embarked on an extensive field immersion program that blended rural innovation, agricultural transformation, cultural preservation, and administrative learning—all in one enlightening journey.
Rural Development, Public Health, and Grassroots Administration: A Ground-Level Study
During their visit to the villages of Ahugi Kalan and Bhatwari, the trainee officers conducted a detailed assessment of rural health services, agricultural practices, and community-driven initiatives. Officers Gangadhari Vikram, Tandin Wang Chuk, Srishti Suresh, Mona Jakhar, Priya Ranjan, and Yogesh Rajput reviewed the functioning of sub-health centers in both locations.
At Ahugi Kalan, Medical Officer Awadhesh Kumar provided an in-depth overview of local immunization programs for women and children, showcasing steady advancements in primary healthcare delivery at the village level.
Dragon Fruit Farming: A Long-Term Economic Engine for Rural Women
Interacting with members of the Ujjwala Self Help Group at Bhatwari, the trainee officers received a comprehensive explanation of dragon fruit cultivation, a crop increasingly preferred for its high value and low maintenance.
They learned that:
The fruit’s market demand is rapidly rising across multiple states.
Once planted, dragon fruit plants can continue producing for 20–25 years.
Women farmers are adopting this farming model as a reliable source of sustained income.
The officers praised the initiative, recognizing it as a powerful example of how innovative farming can reshape rural livelihoods and boost household earnings.
Education Gaps Highlighted in Aspirational Block
At the block headquarters, trainee officer Mona Jakhar addressed the issues surrounding education in Haliya, an aspirational block. She emphasized the urgent need for better learning environments and infrastructure. The discussion was attended by BDO Vijayshankar Tripathi, ADO Panchayat Rupesh Srivastava, Village Head Ramesh Maurya, and Rajesh Maurya, reflecting the region’s multi-level administrative coordination for development.
Exploring Mythology, Architecture, and Local History
As part of their foundational training schedule, a team of 12 IAS trainees from the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration, Mussoorie, led by Ms. Deepika (Tamil Nadu cadre), explored significant cultural landmarks of the region.
Accompanied by Tehsildar Abhinav Tiwari, they visited the ancient Maharishi Ved Vyas Temple, gaining insights into the location’s mythological importance. They also toured the impressive Chaurasi Gumbad monument and expressed surprise that such a remarkable historical structure remains largely unrecognized on the national tourism map.
Industrial Learning Through Handmade Paper Workshops
The officers further deepened their understanding of local industries by visiting handmade paper manufacturing units. Under the guidance of Narendra Kumar Tiwari, President of the Handmade Paper Manufacturers Committee, and Vineet Gupta, they observed the entire production cycle—from raw fiber processing to the final product.
They were also briefed on:
The centuries-old craftsmanship behind handmade paper
Its unique texture and durability
The cultural and historical relevance of the craft
The visit was also attended by District Programme Officer Sharad Awasthi and other officials, ensuring that the trainees received a holistic view of the local entrepreneurial ecosystem.
A Comprehensive Training Experience for Future Administrators
This multi-dimensional field program has provided young IAS officers with:
Practical exposure to governance at the village and block levels
Firsthand insights into rural health and agricultural innovation
A deeper appreciation for the region’s cultural heritage
Understanding of local industrial capabilities
The immersive learning experience is expected to significantly shape their administrative perspective, equipping them to design and implement development policies with greater sensitivity, awareness, and impact.
