ACC Approves Key Leadership Changes in Ministry of Law & Justice, Appoints New Member Secretary to Law Commission and Extends Tenure of Legislative Secretary
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has sanctioned a series of major administrative decisions concerning top positions within the Ministry of Law and Justice. These approvals relate to leadership appointments, extension of tenure, and allocation of additional responsibilities to senior officers of the Indian Legal Service (ILS).
Dr. Anju Rathi Rana Appointed as Member Secretary, 23rd Law Commission of India
The ACC has approved the appointment of Dr. Anju Rathi Rana, an officer of the Indian Legal Service and presently serving as Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, as the Member Secretary of the 23rd Law Commission of India.
Dr. Anju Rathi Rana will assume her new role from the date she takes charge, and her tenure will continue until the completion of the Commission’s term or until further orders, whichever occurs earlier. This key appointment places her at the center of national legal research, law reform recommendations, and policy advisory functions undertaken by the Law Commission.
Tenure of Dr. Rajiv Mani Extended as Secretary, Legislative Department
In another important decision, the ACC has approved the extension of tenure of Dr. Rajiv Mani, an ILS officer currently serving as Secretary, Legislative Department in the Ministry of Law & Justice.
His central deputation has been extended from January 9, 2026, until July 31, 2028, aligning with the date of his superannuation. The extension ensures continuity in legislative drafting, statutory reforms, and parliamentary support work handled by the department.
Dr. Rajiv Mani Assigned Additional Charge of Department of Legal Affairs
In addition to the extension, the ACC has entrusted Dr. Rajiv Mani with the additional charge of Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs.
This arrangement will come into effect upon the relieving of Dr. Anju Rathi Rana from her current position and will continue until a regular appointee assumes office or until further directives are issued, whichever is earlier. His dual responsibility underscores the government’s confidence in his expertise and ensures seamless functioning across both key departments of the ministry.
These decisions form part of the government’s broader effort to maintain strong leadership in legal policymaking, legislative drafting, and judicial reform processes.
