Maharashtra Government Transfers Three IAS Officers; Vijay Suryavanshi Appointed PCMC Commissioner, Bapu Pawar and Mahesh Awhad Get Key Roles
The Maharashtra government has transferred three IAS officers, appointing Vijay Suryavanshi as PCMC Commissioner, Bapu Pawar as CEO of the Medical Goods Procurement Authority, and Mahesh Awhad as CMD of PMPML, strengthening leadership in urban development, healthcare procurement, and public transport.
In a significant reshuffle of senior administrative positions, the Maharashtra government has announced the transfer and posting of three IAS officers, filling crucial leadership roles in urban governance, medical procurement, and public transport.
The most prominent appointment is that of Vijay Suryavanshi (IAS: 2006, Maharashtra cadre), who has been named the new Municipal Commissioner of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) in Pune. Suryavanshi, who previously served as Divisional Commissioner of the Konkan Division, will now oversee one of Maharashtra’s fastest-growing urban centers. His appointment comes at a time when Pimpri Chinchwad is focusing on smart city initiatives, infrastructure expansion, and improving public service delivery.
Alongside this, two mid-career IAS officers have also been entrusted with new responsibilities:
Bapu Pawar (IAS: 2015, Maharashtra cadre) has been appointed as Chief Executive Officer of the Maharashtra Medical Goods Procurement Authority in Mumbai. Pawar, who earlier served as Joint Secretary in the Water Supply and Sanitation Department, will now lead the state’s medical procurement operations — a critical role in ensuring timely supply and management of essential medical equipment and pharmaceuticals.
Mahesh Awhad (IAS: 2015, Maharashtra cadre) has been transferred to Pune as Chairman and Managing Director of Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). Awhad, who previously headed the Medical Goods Procurement Authority, will now be responsible for strengthening Pune’s public transport system, focusing on urban mobility, passenger convenience, and sustainable transport solutions.
Significance of the Transfers
These transfers reflect the Maharashtra government’s strategy of positioning experienced officers in roles where their expertise can maximize governance impact:
Urban Development: Vijay Suryavanshi’s appointment as PCMC Commissioner is expected to accelerate urban development projects, improve civic infrastructure, and enhance efficiency in municipal services.
Healthcare Procurement: Bapu Pawar’s new role is vital for streamlining medical procurement processes, ensuring transparency, and strengthening the state’s healthcare supply chain.
Public Transport: Mahesh Awhad’s leadership at PMPML will be crucial in modernizing Pune’s public transport network, addressing congestion, and promoting eco-friendly mobility solutions.
Broader Context
Administrative reshuffles of this nature are common in state governance, but the latest postings highlight Maharashtra’s focus on urban management, healthcare logistics, and transport modernization. With rapid urbanization and increasing demands on public services, the government is keen to place capable officers in positions that directly impact citizens’ daily lives.
The appointments also underline the importance of IAS officers in driving forward flagship programs — from smart city projects in Pimpri Chinchwad to efficient medical procurement in Mumbai and improved public transport in Pune.
